Why Grey’s Anatomy Spinoff Is Ending Explained By Disney Exec

Station 19‘s impending ending gets an explanation by Disney Television Group President Craig Erwich. Serving as a spinoff of Grey’s Anatomy, Shonda Rhimes’ hit medical drama, Station 19 first premiered in 2018, following the lives of various individuals working at firehouse station 19 in Seattle. The show is set to return for season 7 this spring, which will conclude the series’ run.

Ahead of the release of Station 19 season 7, Erwich explains why the Grey’s Anatomy spinoff show is ending during a recent interview with Deadline. According to the executive, it was just the show’s natural endpoint. Check out his full explanation below:

“Well, every show has its own journey so to speak. In the case of Station 19, it was time to bring that story to an end. I love Station 19, and I think what’s amazing about Station 19 is that it was yes, a spinoff of Grey’s. But it really became its own show that stood on its own creatively and was fully realized and unique unto itself, and we’ve been very proud to have it on the air. I’m proud to be in business with Shonda [Rhimes] on that show.”

Will Any Other Grey’s Anatomy Spinoff Shows Happen?

Why Station 19 May Not Be The Last

Why Grey’s Anatomy Spinoff Is Ending Explained By Disney Exec

Grey’s Anatomy continues to chug along on ABC, chronicling the lives and careers of the staff at a fictional Seattle hospital. Even though Ellen Pompeo, Meredith Grey herself, has departed the show as a series regular, Grey’s Anatomy season 20 is approaching, and it’s possible it will get renewed for season 21. Clearly, the mothership show remains a draw for audiences even 19 years after it first premiered.

Station 19 is one of three Grey’s Anatomy spinoffs alongside Private Practice and Grey’s Anatomy: B-Team. Private Practice ran for six seasons from 2007 to 2013, while Grey’s Anatomy: B-Team ran for only one season in 2018. So far, the original show has vastly outlived all of its spinoffs, speaking to the power of the show’s premise and core cast. Despite this, it’s entirely possible that another spinoff will move forward in the future, especially if the main series continues.

While Private Practice focused on an existing Grey’s Anatomy character with Addison Montgomery (Kate Walsh) as the lead, Station 19 mostly focused on its own new characters, with occasional crossover events with the mothership show. Station 19‘s success suggests that a new spinoff could take a similar approach, perhaps following Seattle police officers or paramedics instead. It remains to be seen whether Station 19 will be the last Grey’s Anatomy spinoff, but the larger Grey’s Anatomy extended universe certainly feels ripe for further exploration.
