Why Bill Randa Wins Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’ Love Triangle Explained By Monsterverse Star

Warning: SPOILERS lie ahead for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters!

With episode 6 setting up a complicated dynamic between the three, Anders Holm explains why Bill Randa ultimately wins Monarch: Legacy of Monsters‘ love triangle. While episode 1 made it clear that a relationship would form between him and Mari Yamamoto’s Keiko, “Terrifying Miracles” opened the door for feelings between the latter and Wyatt Russell’s Lee Shaw, the two even sharing a kiss while in Japan discovering the Titan lure being developed by scientist Suzuki. Episode 6 ultimately ends with these feelings being squashed after Shaw’s meeting with the duo in Japan leads to the Army taking over Monarch.

In honor of its premiere, Screen Rant interviewed Holm to discuss Monarch: Legacy of Monsters episode 6. When asked about the love triangle that forms between Randa, Keiko and Lee, the star explained the ultimate reason for the former winning over the heart of his fellow scientist comes down to their “shared passion” for their work in investigating M.U.T.O.s and Titans, with Lee’s aversion to discovering more ultimately being a barrier for their future. Check out what Holm explained below:

But there’s a respect, too. I think that when Bill sees Keiko and Lee’s relationship starting to spark, he’s like, “Oh, okay. Well, sure. Great. I’m focused on the work.” Then, as things start to swerve back the other way, I think Billy and Keiko really bond on the work, and maybe less with each other, but on their shared passion. I think that’s what they build their relationship on: their shared passion for the unknown and what’s possible…

… I think it’s his desire to find the truth. He’s a searcher; she’s a searcher. She doesn’t want to just be like Lee, in some ways, who is not looking for more answers because more answers might lead to more problems. He’s like, “This is the way it is. I’m fine. I don’t need any more. Let’s just work with the cards we’ve been dealt,” where I’m like, “What if we don’t even have cards?”

Why Keiko & Lee’s Relationship Would Never Have Worked

Though Yamamoto and the younger Russell display plenty of chemistry throughout Monarch: Legacy of Monsters episode 6, particularly during the defense industry ball, the reality is the two would never have worked out as a couple. As Holm notes above, their core motivations diverge drastically, with Shaw clearly looking for recognition from the government, while Keiko and Randa stay true to their scientific drive and are fascinated in learning more about the history of the various M.U.T.O.s within the Monsterverse. Additionally, the duo show more drive to learn how to coexist with them rather than wipe them out.

Shaw has not only shown an interest in the latter in the past storyline, but in the 2015 Monarch: Legacy of Monsters timeline, as well, particularly in episode 7. The end of the episode saw Kurt Russell’s older incarnation of the character return to Alaska to destroy a rift leading to Hollow Earth. While Keiko and Randa may have expressed an understanding in the hopes of preventing dangerous M.U.T.O.s from quickly making their way into the world, they likely would’ve been quicker to study the rift and the creatures that emerged from it in comparison to wiping them out.

This doesn’t inherently mean that Shaw is a villain within Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, though. As he exclaimed to Cate, Kentaro and May in episode 6 of the Monsterverse show, the older Shaw is much more keen to help Godzilla and keep the titular organization from their attempts to destroy him, all the while their deputy director, Verdugo, looks to be putting Monarch back on the benevolent path Shaw, Keiko and Randa initially wanted to take the organization when they first formed it. With only the surface scratched of the elder Shaw’s plans for Godzilla and Monarch, it will be interesting to see whether Randa’s descendants will take his side, or if they similarly become disillusioned with him.
