Why All American Being Renewed Means Hope For CW Shows

Why All American Being Renewed Means Hope For CW Shows

Following All American’s renewal for a sixth season on The CW, hopes have increased for the continuation of other beloved CW shows. In October 2022, Nexstar Media acquired The CW to revive the production company. However, the changing of leaders put the survival of flagship CW series into question. Reportedly, Nexstar’s plans for the CW include replacing original scripted programming with unscripted programs, news shows, and other programming targeted at older viewers. Luckily, the renewal of All American is the first step in the right direction.

Over the years, the CW has offered some of the most popular television series of the last decade. Fan favorites include the DC TV shows like The Flash, Arrow, and Superman and Lois, sci-fi and fantasy epics like Supernatural, and dramas like Riverdale and, of course, All American. However, the network’s ratings have decreased in recent years. Even before the acquisition, 10 original CW series were canceled, and four were set to end this year. Now, the question remains which few shows will make it through the transition?

Four More CW Shows Could Be Renewed

Why All American Being Renewed Means Hope For CW Shows

It has been reported that of the 11 original scripted shows airing on the CW currently, only five will remain, and with All American’s renewal, this leaves only four spots. The shows that may be renewed include Two Sentence Horror Stories, Walker, Kung Fu, All American: Homecoming, Walker: Independence, and The Winchesters. Series like The Flash, Riverdale, and Nancy Drew will conclude in 2023, while Superman and Lois season 3 and the Gotham Knights premiere have yet to air, so they are exempt from the decision at this point.

Which Shows Have A Better Likelihood Of Getting Renewed

Though it’s impossible to predict the CW’s decision, it’s most likely that the series with the highest ratings and popularity will be renewed. All American checked that box, and as of now, Walker, Walker: Independence, and The Winchesters are the CW’s other best candidates regarding the highest overall ratings. As reported by IMDb. Walker and The Winchesters also seem to garner the most popularity. In the past, Superman and Lois have also boasted high ratings, though the premiere of Superman and Lois season 3 may impact its fate.

Another aspect of the possible renewals may lie in their connections to other popular CW series. For example, not only is Walker a reboot of the Chuck Norris series, but it also stars Supernatural’s Sam Winchester, played by Jared Padalecki, and his real-life wife and fellow Supernatural alum, Genevieve Padalecki. Similarly, The Winchesters is a spin-off of Supernatural, which still harbors a vast fan base since its end in 2020. Plus, series related to the DC franchise, including Superman and Lois and the upcoming Gotham Knights, may have a better chance at gathering an audience than more independent series. Though All American did not have such connections, they still have the potential to give these series a better chance at survival.

While All American season 6 is a win for devoted viewers, it also shows that the CW’s classic content may not disappear forever or altogether. Despite the iconic CW series that have been canceled, saving even some of the network’s original content is a good thing. Hopefully, the remaining four shows will continue to excite audiences and keep the CW able to do what they do best.
