Who Killed Sara: Every Character Who Could Still Be The Killer

Who Killed Sara: Every Character Who Could Still Be The Killer

Warning: SPOILERS for Who Killed Sara? season 1.

At the end of Who Killed Sara? season 1, there are still several possible suspects in Sara’s murder. The first season was full of twists and turns that led to many unanswered questions leading into Who Killed Sara? season 2, which is set to release on Netflix on May 19.

In Who Killed Sara? season 1Alex Guzmán is out for revenge having spent 18 years in prison after being wrongfully convicted of his sister, Sara’s death. After he’s released, Alex vows to take down César Lazcano, the man who helped put him in jail – and whom Alex believes may have been involved in his sister’s murder. With the help of a few enemies-turned-allies from the Lazcano family, Alex searches for the real killer.

Throughout season 1, several viable suspects emerge, leading Alex down the rabbit hole. But by the end of the season finale, the real killer has yet to be revealed. It’s possible another character could still turn out to be the killer in Who Killed Sara? season 2.

Mariana Lazcano/Elroy

Who Killed Sara: Every Character Who Could Still Be The Killer

After Elroy delivered the news that César – not Rodolfo – was the father of Sara’s baby, it quickly became obvious that Mariana wanted Sara dead. She ordered Elroy to help her get revenge by cutting the ropes of the parasail. Elroy turns out to be quite a tragic figure as we learn more about his past. After being sexually abused by his father as a child, it’s implied that Elroy killed both of his parents, making it look like an accident. These accidents are thematically linked to the parasailing accident and Sara’s apparent death, but a few things remain unclear. For one thing, Elroy is never shown actually cutting the rope – only holding the knife above it. The moment when he is about to make the cut, the show jumps to another scene. The conclusion being that the filmmakers are deliberately leaving this ambiguous, for some reason.

What Who Killed Sara? makes clear is that Mariana is a master manipulator. First, she tries to talk Elory into cutting the parasail rope. Then, before Sara and the others leave to go out on the boat, Mariana manipulates Sara into parasailing by telling her to take advantage of any adventures she can before the baby arrives. With this idea implanted into her mind, Sara’s quick to volunteer to parasail first. Especially after Elroy says the Lazcano brothers aren’t allowed to, per their mother’s orders. By the end of season 1, Who Killed Sara? has set up Elroy – commanded by Mariana – as the likeliest culprit of the crime. But Elroy could still be a red herring. Another possibility is that the accident didn’t actually kill Sara. In which case, even if he did cut the rope, Elroy isn’t the killer.

César Lazcano/Sergio

If Sara survived the accident, this opens the door for several other suspects. Namely, César and his long-time partner in crime, Sergio. When Elisa Lazcano confronts her father about Sara’s death, calling him a murderer, he swears on his life that he had nothing to with “her accident” – but he never says he didn’t kill her. This choice of wording may have been deliberate. Indeed, on the day of the accident, his behavior makes him appear far less guilty than Mariana. His surprise seems genuine and he frantically tells his wife to call the hospital. Meanwhile, Mariana pretended to make the call.

If César killed Sara, the most likely scenario is that it happened after the accident. Knowing that he’s the father of Sara’s baby, it’s possible César kept Sara alive and hidden long enough for her to give birth, and then murdered her after the fact. While César treats pretty much everyone in his life as if they are disposable – especially the women – he takes young Bruno under his wing, so to speak. His grandson is one of the only characters César still attempts to endear himself to. Bruno’s father doesn’t make an appearance in Who Killed Sara? season 1, and his mother, Sofia’s past remains murky. Given how uncharacteristically caring César is towards him, it’s possible Bruno is actually Sara and César’s son. César and Sergio have had no trouble hiding and making other victims disappear in the past, so it isn’t a stretch to assume that they could have done the same thing to Sara without anyone else knowing.

Chema Lazcano

Chema in Who Killed Sara?

By the end of Who Killed Sara? season 1, some viewers may no longer consider him a viable suspect, but there are still a few reasons to suspect that Chema could be the killer. Shortly before the accident, Sara discovered that Chema had feelings for her brother, Alex. This is one of the first times the audience begins to see a different side of Sara, who cruelly berates Chema and threatens to tell César. Knowing that his father would not react well if he were to discover his secret, Chema lashes out at Sara when threatened. If he felt scared enough of his father, Chema could have killed Sara to protect himself.

Aside from the altercation between Chema and Sara shortly before the accident, he also destroys evidence pertaining to her alleged death. In flashback scenes from the time of the accident, Chema is constantly shown recording what is happening. Alex goes to Chema and asks him for help, telling him he needs to see Chema’s VHS tapes. Instead of giving them to him, Chema claims not to know where the tapes are and then proceeds to secretly destroy them. If he hadn’t already told Alex about his feelings for him, it might make sense that Chema would want to hide the tapes. But given that Alex knows the truth, it’s likely there’s something else on the tapes that Chema is trying to hide. It could be that he knows something more than he’s saying about Sara’s accident. It’s also possible that he’s the one responsible.

Marifer Fernández Gálvez

Marifer and Sara were best friends but had a falling out around the time of Sara’s death. Though the show hasn’t explained what their fight was about, viewers do know that Marifer was upset the day of Sara’s accident. She called Sara in tears and begged her to come over. When Sara refused, telling Marifer that she was going to the lake with Ridolfo, Marifer goes off. She tells Sara to “go to hell” before hanging up on her, and she’s visibly distraught after the call. It’s later revealed that Sara told Marifer about Flor being tortured, giving her the tape she stole from César and Sergio. Knowing that Sara trusted her enough to share the tape, it’s possible Marifer knew more about Sara than the rest of the characters in Who Killed Sara? season 1.

Marifer is also thought to be the mysterious “Diana the Huntress,” someone who starts communicating with Alex online and claims to know who really killed Sara. But how she’s managed to get her hands on the information she’s been allegedly sending Alex remains another one of the mysteries in season 1. Only Chema and Nicandro were filming the day of the accident, and Nicandro died years earlier in London. If Nicandro and Chema were the only two people known to have tapes of that weekend, then it’s unclear how Marifer got the video footage she sent to Alex under the guise of Diana the Huntress. While she may not be the most obvious suspect, there are still enough unanswered questions about her character that leave room for the possibility. She certainly knows more than she’s letting on.

Who Killed Sara Season 1 Explained

Another theory is that Sara took her own life. But there’s also evidence to suggest that she may still be alive. In the season finale, Alex finds Sara’s second diary and it reveals that she may have been struggling with her mental health shortly before her accident. Could Sara really turn out to be the killer? In a murder mystery series inspired by Agatha Christie – the queen of plot twists – anything is possible. Of course, there’s always the chance that audiences haven’t met the murderer yet. Who Killed Sara? fans will have to wait until next season to find out. The good news is, they won’t have to wait long.
