Who Killed Sara: Diana The Huntress Theory Explained

Warning: SPOILERS for Who Killed Sara? season 1.

In the Who Killed Sara? season 1 finale, it’s revealed that Sara’s best friend, Marifer, is the mysterious online persona known as Diana the Huntress, but one fan theory suggests that there’s more to learn about these two characters and the true identity behind the pseudonym. The Netflix crime drama created by José Ignacio Valenzuela and filmed in Mexico became an instant hit after its premiere. The show has already been renewed, and Who Killed Sara? season 2 will be released on the streaming platform on May 19.

In the final episode of Who Killed Sara? season 1, Alex finds Sara’s hidden diary. Quickly flipping through the pages – which are written in Spanish and partially covered up by sketches and drawings – he’s clearly struck by something that he finds. In the moments leading up to the final scene, Alex calls Elisa, telling her that he now believes they were wrong about Sara’s death. The discovery of the diary unlocks secrets for the show to unpack in season 2.

One Who Killed Sara? theory contends that the diary holds the truth about Sara and Marifer’s relationship – the conclusion being that they are half-sisters. According to the theory outlined in Medium, a close examination of the diary shows that Sara and Alex had different fathers and that Sara believed Marifer was her sister. Another finding offers clues about the real date of Sara’s death; the date listed on her tombstone is August 9 – the day of the accident. But the last diary entries are dated August 20 and 29. Assuming Sara wrote the entries, she had to have survived the accident. This is compelling evidence that there’s more to Marifer and Sara’s story, but the contents of the diary also point to the fact that Sara may have been hearing voices at the time. It’s difficult to know how reliable Sara is as a narrator, or exactly what she means when she calls Marifer her sister. But Marifer’s online alias, Diana the Huntress, offers additional clues to further support this theory.

Who Killed Sara: Diana The Huntress Theory Explained

According to Roman mythology, Diana had several half-sisters and brothers; she also had multiple identities. In addition to being the goddess of the hunt, Diana was the goddess of the underworld as well as the goddess of childbirth and fertility. In this one figure, there’s the hunt, birth, and death – three themes that appear throughout Who Killed Sara? season 1. Diana is a complex, multi-faceted goddess – a triple deity known as both a hunter and a protector. Like Sara, she’s a character with many faces and different sides to her personality. Choosing to name the show’s secret coconspirator after Diana offers viewers a clue that the online pseudonym may be linked to more than one person – or more than one personality. This is thematically linked to the multiple voices that appear in Sara’s diary.

Early on, the show hints that Chema is Diana the Huntress. There’s a statue of the goddess on the cover of a book found on his bedroom floor, and the picture matches the photograph shown in the revelation scene with Marifer. This connection can’t be ruled out; it’s possible he’s working with Marifer, especially since we know Chema had tapes from the day of the accident. But if Sara survived as the diary suggests, then she could also be behind the alias. If the theory that Marifer is Sara’s half-sister is correct, there may be more to their backstory that explains how Sara could’ve passed information to Marifer between the time of her accident and her real death. We know that Sara already entrusted Marifer with evidence in the past when she gave her the tape of Flor.

Another possibility is that Sara is still alive in the present-day narrative and working with Marifer under the guise of Diana the Huntress. Either scenario would help to explain how Marifer, acting as Diana the Huntress, knows so much about Sara’s accident and claims to know the truth about her death. Hopefully, Who Killed Sara? season 2 will reveal more about the true nature of Sara and Marifer’s relationship and the identity of Diana the Huntress.
