Warning: SPOILERS ahead for Avengers #6!

Meet the newest Avengers team member: the Impossible City. A sentient metropolis, the City will immediately prove to be an integral member of the team – as Earth’s Mightiest Heroes will be moving into the City and operating out of it as their headquarters, in what is set to be an exciting new era of Avengers stories.

Avengers #6 from Jed McKay, Ivan Fiorelli, Federico Blee, and VC’s Cory Petit chronicles the heroes’ success against the squad of city-slayers known as the Ashen Combine.

The spoils of victory for the Avengers included the liberation of the Impossible City, which promptly offered itself up as the new Avengers HQ.

The Avengers’ New Alien Teammate Is Also Their New Home Base

Impossible City is freed in Avengers #6

The sentient spacefaring vessel known as the Impossible City had been forced to serve the Ashen Combine against its will. Many of the Impossible City’s oldest memories were lost during its occupation by the Ashen Combine. The City is aware that it was created by a team of heroes, and originally served as containment for the Combine, before the city-slaying villains escaped and took control the City. Now that the Ashen Combine have been imprisoned within it once more, there’s a conspicuous symmetry between the City’s oldest memories and it current status quo. More than likely, the story of the Impossible City has only just begun.

As seen in Avengers #6, the downtrodden City is inspired by its time with Captain America and Black Panther, as well as by witnessing the Combine’s defeat. Given the opportunity to choose its future, the Impossible City shares its one wish with the team: “I have decided that I would like to be an Avenger.” Despite some questions about how the City will fit into the team, its impact as their new base of operations will be immediate, and vital to the team’s ongoing mission. Beyond that, the range of the powers the Impossible City wields remains nebulous. While it is capable of star travel, it has yet to showcase any defensive or offensive capabilities.

The Impossible City Has Only Begun Its Adventures With The Avengers

Out of a blend of curiosity and pity, the City allowed itself to be infiltrated by T’Challa and Sam Wilson. However, it remained fully confident in its ability to weather any threat the Avengers could pose, so at the very least, the Impossible City is extremely durable. Other than that, the Impossible City has served as an observer, rather than a participant, in the majority of their introductory arc. In this way, the most exciting thing about the City’s introduction to Marvel Comics is the limitless potential it has, with the possibility to become an essential character in the Avengers moving forward.

Avengers #6 is available now from Marvel Comics.
