The White House website now has a dark mode, along with the option to increase font size. Dark mode can help reduce eye strain, while a larger font is easier to read, especially for the visually impaired. If a user doesn’t like the way dark mode or a larger font looks on the website, it’s very easy to switch back to the original settings once again.
Several apps, including WhatsApp, utilize dark mode in order to make the app easier to use, while Apple began offering a dark mode option with iOS 13. In addition to adding a dark mode feature to the Google Docs, Slides and Sheets apps on Android phones, Google also tested a dark mode in Chrome this past December. It’s also possible to increase the font size on a smartphone in Settings, like on an iPhone XR, by heading to Display & Brightness under Settings and tapping on Font Size before increasing the font as needed. Many apps, including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram will automatically adjust to any changed settings.
When visiting the White House website, users first see a white background and smaller font. The toggles for dark mode and larger font are on the left side of the screen. Clicking the dark mode toggle — a circle with one black and one white half — turns the white background black, while also turning the dark blue font to white. Dark blue links, such as the “Follow the White House on Facebook” link, become yellow to better contrast. The large font toggle — a lowercase “t” and an uppercase “T” — shifts the Updates tab to the main body of the website. The font size changes from 11.5 to 22.5 for easier readability. Users can toggle both options on at the same time, or just choose to use either one. If they don’t like how dark mode or the larger font looks, they can simply toggle either or both off again.
Navigating The White House Website
The Menu icon in the upper right corner leads to a page containing several important links, including “Get Involved” which offers the opportunity to write to or call the White House, among other ways to be active. This page also provides access to the White House social media pages, including the YouTube channel. Scrolling down the main page, users have the option to learn more about the new administration, including the Cabinet.
Further down on the page, users can also learn about the history of the White House as well as previous presidents. There is also a link where people can learn about the Biden administration’s plans for dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic. Near the bottom of the page, there is an option to sign up to stay connected by submitting an email address and zip code.
