Where’s Discovery? Star Trek Is Killing The Hype For Its Biggest 2024 Show

Where’s Discovery? Star Trek Is Killing The Hype For Its Biggest 2024 Show

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 is the biggest Star Trek show of 2024, but where is the hype? In March, Paramount+ announced that season 5 would also be the final season of Star Trek: Discovery and the series was effectively canceled. Discovery season 5 wasn’t planned to be the end of the show, but reshoots commenced in April to craft a proper ending to make the season 5 finale a satisfying series finale for Star Trek: Discovery. This work was completed prior to the Writer’s Guild of America strike that started in May and the SAG-AFTRA strike in July, but very little has been revealed about Discovery season 5 – even just to build hype – since the first trailer dropped in October 2022.

Hailed as a welcome change to a more adventurous tone, Star Trek: Discovery season 5 will see Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) lead the hunt for “the greatest treasure in the known galaxy.” This mystery booty also attracts other seekers, including two new alien characters, L’ak (Elias Toufexis) and Moll (Eve Harlow), as well as a new Starfleet Captain named Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie). In lieu of full-court press for Discovery season 5 due to the strikes, Paramount+ released an exciting 5 minutes of footage at San Diego Comic-Con in July. But following the end of Star Trek: Lower Decks season 4, The Ready Room showed a “sneak peek” trailer for Discovery season 5 that was identical to the one released a year ago. That trailer can be seen at the 28:00 time stamp in the video below:

We Need A New Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Trailer & Release Date

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 needs an actual 2024 release date. After Discovery’s cancelation was announced, Paramount+ moved Discovery season 5 out of its previously planned fall 2023 release date to “early 2024.” Currently, Discovery season 5 is still earmarked to release in “early 2024” but no actual date is set. Paramount+’s original plan was to stage a series of media events to hype up the final season of the Star Trek TV show that kicked off this bold new era. However, the SAG-AFTRA strike makes it impossible for the cast to do press and hype up the final season, and Paramount+ has apparently just shelved Discovery until the strike is over, and they can give the show a full media blitz with Sonequa Martin-Green and the actors to lend their crucial star power.

However, nothing is stopping Paramount+ from delivering a new Star Trek: Discovery season 5 trailer in the meantime, with some fresh footage to ring in the new year. It’s strange that July 2023 was the last time new Discovery season 5 scenes were shown. Paramount+ didn’t release anything about Discovery season 5 on Star Trek Day in September or New York Comic Con in October – not even new key art or a poster. Rehashing the October 2022 trailer to accompany The Ready Room‘s coverage of Star Trek: Lower Decks season 4 ending is also frustrating; after all, the completed Discovery season 5 has been in the can for months. A new Discovery season 5 trailer is necessary to boost excitement for the series, an important signal to the fanbase to look forward to Star Trek coming back strong in 2024.

Discovery Season 5 Is Star Trek’s Biggest 2024 Event

Where’s Discovery? Star Trek Is Killing The Hype For Its Biggest 2024 Show

The lack of hype to build up Star Trek: Discovery season 5 is also bizarre considering it is the biggest event Star Trek on Paramount+ has in 2024. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 won’t be released in 2024, and Paramount+ canceled Star Trek: Prodigy, which fans saved and will now stream on Netflix. The Star Trek: Section 31 movie starring Academy Award-winner Michelle Yeoh is also iffy to release in 2024 due to the strikes.

Season 5 may be Star Trek: Discovery‘s final season, but Michael Burnham’s show also has to follow the back-to-back 2023 mega successes of Star Trek: Picard season 3 and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2. Both series won over appreciative Star Trek fans, with Picard delivering on decades of nostalgia for the reunion of Star Trek: The Next Generation‘s cast and Strange New Worlds taking bold swings like a comedy crossover with Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek‘s first-ever musical. Picard and Strange New Worlds episodes landed on the Streaming Top 10 charts, and Strange New Worlds‘ musical soundtrack topped Apple’s streaming charts.

To be sure, the final season of Star Trek: Discovery is a very big deal as the flagship show that launched Star Trek on Paramount+ sails off into the final frontier. But Discovery also never enjoyed quite the same level of acclaim from Star Trek fans that Picard season 3 and Strange New Worlds did, and Disco needs all the hype it can get to give the final season its proper credence and flowers. But strike or no strike, all of that starts by ramping up fan anticipation for Star Trek: Discovery season 5 by delivering a new trailer, key art, something – and soon.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 premieres in 2024 on Paramount+.
