Where Was The Fallout Show Filmed? The Video Game Adaptation’s Filming Locations Explained

Amazon Prime Video’s Fallout is out now, and here is an explanation of all of the known locations that the highly anticipated TV show filmed at. Amazon Prime Video is attempting to bring Fallout‘s iconic world into live action with the release of the TV adaptation, which is a difficult feat to pull off. However, the Fallout TV show seems to have done it, with many of the most iconic locations from the games appearing in the TV series. So, here is every known filming location that was used for Fallout and what each one was used for.

Fallout is Amazon Prime Video’s highly popular live action adaptation of the video game series of the same name, with the series exploring the post-apocalpytic wasteland from the original games. Fallout follows Lucy, Maximus, and Cooper Howard, three characters who each come from a different corner of the Fallout universe as they each cross the wasteland in order to chase down the same goal. The cast of Fallout‘s interconnecting storylines bring the characters to all kinds of exciting locations from the video games, and here are the real-world places that were used to bring these settings to life.

Nyack, New York

Red Rocket Truck Stop

Amazon Prime Video’s Fallout adaptation does take place in a lot of original locations that are added to the wasteland, but it also features a few settings directly adapted from the video games. The Red Rocket truck stop is one of the iconic locations from the Fallout video games that is featured in the TV show, with it making an appearance in episode 7. The Red Rocket truck stop made its first appearance in Fallout 4, with it being one of the first locations that the player visits. The location is notable for being where the player first meets Dogmeat.

Who Is Vault Boy? Fallout’s Vault-Tec Mascot & Origins Explained

Vault Boy is one of the most instantly recognizable icons of the Fallout franchise, and there’s a good reason for his enduring popularity.

The Fallout TV series used a real gas station in Nyack, New York for its filming location, transforming it to look exactly like the Red Rocket truck stop from the video games. While a significant amount of work had to be done in order to transport the gas station to Fallout‘s wasteland, the look and layout of the original gas station already looks shockingly close to the Fallout truck stop. Although the Red Rocket truck stop doesn’t play a major role in the Fallout video game series, it is nice to see the truck stop get some representation.

Another unique filming location for Fallout is Kolmanskop, Sperrgebiet, Nambia, with the location playing a prominent role in the Fallout TV show (via What To Watch). Kolmanskop is an abandoned mining town that was a prominent location for diamond mining before being abandoned in 1965, with it remaining a ghost town since. The filmmakers behind Fallout found Kolmanskop while seeking out locations for the TV show, with them realizing that the abandoned Nambian mining town would be perfect for recreating Fallout‘s wasteland. Thus, part of Fallout‘s production was set in this unconventional filming location, with it being transformed into an important location.

The Fallout TV show used Kolmanskop to represent a post-apocalyptic Los Angeles, with it being the perfect stand in for the city after being decimated by a nuclear war. Shady Sands is an abandoned city prominently featured in the Fallout TV series, with Kolmanskop and some of its abandoned buildings being used as the exterior for the city. In the Fallout TV show, Shady Sands is a city that was established after the bombs dropped, with the city later falling. Shady Sands was the home to thousands of people, with the TV series explaining the history of the location.

Wendover Air Force Base, Utah

Brotherhood Of Steel Base

Wendover Airfield, Utah is another interesting location used in the Fallout TV show, with it being another prominently featured setting in the TV show. Wendover Air Force Base is a real historical site in Utah that was used as a training camp for bombers during World War II, with it since being used for other types of weapon testing in the decades after the war. Interestingly, prototype atomic weapons were created and tested at Wendover Air Force Base in February 1945, with the location’s link to nuclear weaponry making it an ironic choice for the Fallout TV show.

In the Fallout TV show, the Wendover Air Force Base in Utah is used as the setting for the Brotherhood of Steel’s base camp, with Maximus being seen training there early in the series. Various sci-fi tech such as airships, weapons, and Fallout‘s iconic power armor are housed at this location, with the Brotherhood of Steel eventually leaving their base to track Maximus down. Although the Brotherhood of Steel’s base camp isn’t seen much after the early Fallout episodes, the Wendover Air Force Base in Utah is perfect for bringing this location to life.

Various Scenes

The famous city of Las Vegas, Nevada was also used to film some scenes in Fallout, although the city’s iconic locations aren’t shown off in the Amazon Prime Video TV show. Los Angeles, California

Various Scenes

Los Angeles, California is one of the film capitals of the world, so it isn’t surprising that a good chunk of Amazon Prime Video’s Fallout TV show was shot there. Although a good chunk of the series was already filmed in Los Angeles, it seems likely that even more will be filmed there for season 2, as Fallout has received tax credits from California that is causing future filming to be moved to the city.

New York City, New York

Various Scenes

Another city that the Amazon Prime Video Fallout TV series filmed in that is quite unsurprising is New York City, New York. Much like Los Angeles, New York is a major location for various productions, with there being a variety of reasons for Fallout to shoot there. It also isn’t known exactly what scenes were filmed in New York City, but it can be assumed that some key locations in Amazon Prime Video’s Fallout were created in the city.
