With the novel Coronavirus outbreak bringing nearly every theater around the world to a temporary close, studios have increasingly decided to give their recent movies an early VOD release — including The Hunt and The Invisible Man.
At the time of writing this article, major studios were approaching what should have been blockbuster season. As the Coronavirus pandemic put an indefinite pause on these new movies, studios found a way to attempt to bring in a little money and entertain audiences at the same time — early VOD releases. Despite trying early VOD releases in the past, Universal Studios was among the first to make this nearly unprecedented move in the wake of COVID-19, releasing a small handful of their recent theatrical releases on VOD for home streaming early.
The Invisible Man performed well in its late February 2020 theatrical release. At the time of writing this article, the movie sits at 91% on Rotten Tomatoes. The Hunt, already plagued with controversy and delays, was released in theaters mid-March 2020, which was right when the vast majority of non-essential businesses began to temporarily shut down. The movie received mixed reviews and is currently sitting at 52% percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Hunt is loosely based on The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell. A group of wealthy elite select and kidnap a group of “deplorables.” The elite drop the group in a remote field with a small stash of guns, as they begin to hunt them for sport. Crystal, a member of the hunted, begins to fight back and takes out her captors one by one. The Hunt is available to rent on Amazon Prime Video for $18.99 and on GooglePlay, FandangoNow, iTunes, and Vudu for $19.99 in the US. In the UK, Amazon and GooglePlay offer The Hunt for £15.99.

The Invisible Man is a modern retelling of the classic 1933 horror film, based on H.G. Wells’ novel of the same name. Instead of following the titular invisible man, this version is about Cecilia. She escapes an abusive relationship with her boyfriend Adrian, who is a renowned leader in the field of optics. Despite getting word he has committed suicide, Cecilia begins to believe that Adrian has found a way to become invisible and is stalking her. No one believes her, so it’s up to her to fight an invisible foe all on her own.
The Invisible Man is available to rent on Amazon Prime Video for $18.99 and on GooglePlay, FandangoNow, iTunes, and Vudu for $19.99 in the US. In the UK, Amazon and iTunes offer The Invisible Man for £15.99. A handful of studios began to follow Universal’s plan and slated some recent theatrical releases for early VOD release dates as well. But for now, The Invisible Man and The Hunt are available to stream on multiple platforms from the comfort and safety of home.
