Fan-favorite movie hero Sylvester Stallone is back to tossing the bad guys around and saving the day. His latest film, Samaritan, takes place in a crime-infested city whose citizens are in desperate need of a hero… namely, the titular character, who disappeared two decades earlier and is now being searched for by a young boy eager to find someone to save his city.

Despite being in his 70s, Stallone is proving that age is just a number. Just a few short years ago he reprised his role as Rambo in First Blood, and also starred in Escape Plan: The Extractors. His latest shows him in the type of role that suits him best: a down-on-his-luck hero who turns it all around to save the day.

Samaritan not only stars Academy-Award nominated Sylvester Stallone, but he’s also one of the film’s producers through his company, Balboa Productions, named after the role that won him fame back in 1976 as boxer-from-the-streets, Rocky Balboa. Now, Stallone is back on the gritty streets as garbageman and secret superhero, Samaritan, along with Javon “Wanna” Walton as young Sam Cleary. Walton is something of a superhero in his own right as a boxing and gymnastics multi-champion who already has some starring roles under his boxing belt, including Ashtray on HBO’s Euphoria, as well as Grant Bishop in Amazon Prime’s Utopia.

Why Samaritan Took So Long to Make

United Artists together with Amazon Studios brought to life a script written by screenwriter, Bragi F. Schut more than a decade ago. When studios shelved the Samaritan screenplay, writer Bragi F. Schut released the story as a series of graphic novels. Eventually, MGM studios picked up the script and began production, only to halt production during the pandemic. In early 2022, Amazon Studios acquired MGM and began working on the movie again, proving even the bumpiest roads can lead to something great. The now 73-year-old Stallone fits naturally in the role of aging, down-to-earth superhero, Samaritan, since he is a bit of an aging, down-to-earth superhero himself.

In Samaritan, 13-year-old, Sam Cleary lives with his single mom in a city decaying around them and becoming more and more a haven for criminals. But when his aging neighbor takes on a crowd of bullies in an alley to save Sam, he begins to suspect the garbageman next door isn’t quite what he seems. Sam sets out to prove his theory that the aging junk collector is the presumed dead superhero, Samaritan, supposedly killed in a warehouse fire by his arch-nemesis — aptly named Nemesis — over 25 years ago. Though garbageman, Joe Smith, denies that he’s a superhero, a shocking impact with a speeding car reveals the truth in a startling way.
