All Quiet On The Western Front
All Quiet on the Western Front is a remake of the classic 1930 war film that follows a group of young Germans as they realize the harsh realities of war. The film was met with critical acclaim, with highlights being the film’s cinematography and performances. All Quiet on the Western Front is one of the harder Best Picture nominees to find, as the film is a Netflix exclusive, released on the platform in October 2022.
Avatar: The Way of Water
Avatar: The Way of Water is James Cameron’s highly-anticipated sequel to 2009’s Avatar, released 13 years after the original. The film was met with critical acclaim as well as massive box office success, quickly becoming the highest-grossing film of 2022. Unfortunately, due to the film’s December release date, it isn’t on any streaming services yet and is still exclusively in theaters. On top of that, the first Avatar stayed in theaters for a long time, a pattern that Avatar: The Way of Water will probably repeat. While the film will undoubtedly land on Disney+ eventually (much like its predecessor, it may not be until after the Oscars ceremony.)
The Banshees of Inisherin
The Banshees of Inisherin is Martin McDonagh’s newest comedy/drama film that follows the breakdown of a friendship between two men on a small island in Ireland. The film was nominated for awards in multiple categories, including the prestigious Best Picture category. Luckily, the film isn’t too hard to find. The Banshees of Inisherin is streaming on HBO Max, meaning it can be streamed at no extra cost to subscribers. The Banshees of Inisherin is also up for rental on platforms like YouTube, Prime Video, Apple TV, Vudu, Redbox, Microsoft, and through various cable providers.
Elvis
Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis biopic also got a Best Picture nomination, with the film being an awards season darling. The film was released in theaters in June 2022, meaning it’s already been streaming for a while. Much like the previous entry, Elvis is streaming on HBO Max, with it being one of the streaming service’s tent pole releases in 2022. However, Elvis can also be rented through other services, including YouTube, Prime Video, Apple TV, Vudu, Redbox, Microsoft, and cable providers.
Everything Everywhere All At Once
The Daniels’ newest multiversal movie, Everything Everywhere All At Once, is one of the most popular films of 2022, earning its spot in the Academy’s Best Picture nominees. Everything Everywhere All At Once is already streaming on Paramount+ and Showtime, which is included with many other streaming bundles. However, viewers wanting to travel through Everything Everywhere All At Once’s multiverses may be out of luck if they don’t have these services, as it isn’t yet available for rental. The Fabelmans
Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans is the newest film from the beloved legacy director, and this film is considered one of his best. The film is a semi-autobiographical telling of Spielberg’s life, recounting many events leading up to his directing career. Sadly, The Fabelmans isn’t yet available for rental, with it still being in theaters in some locations. However, the film can be bought digitally through some providers, including Apple TV, Prime Video, Google Play, YouTube, Vudu, Microsoft, and Redbox.
Tár
Tár, starring Cate Blanchett, chronicles the downfall of a fictional music professor, with the movie garnering instant acclaim upon its film festival premiere. Unsurprisingly, the film also received a Best Picture nomination, meaning it’s in the running against all of these other prestigious movies. Unfortunately, Tár is not yet included in any streaming services, meaning that viewers will have to pay a little extra to watch the film. Tár can be rented on Apple TV, Prime Video, Google Play, YouTube, Vudu, Microsoft, and Direct TV for a low price. Luckily, due to the quality of Tár, the price is entirely worth it.
Top Gun: Maverick
One of the biggest box-office successes of 2022 Top Gun: Maverick, is the incredibly popular sequel to the original Top Gun. The film is often credited as being the movie that saved theaters after ticket sales declined due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The film’s quality and significance earned it a Best Picture nomination, and luckily, it’s already streaming in several places. Top Gun: Maverick can be watched on Paramount+, Fubo TV, and the newly launched MGM+. Triangle of Sadness
Triangle of Sadness is Swedish director Ruben Östlund’s first English film, with the dark comedy being considered by many to be one of the best movies of 2022. Triangle of Sadness is a satirical story of a group of wealthy elites who become stranded on a deserted island after their boat sinks. Unfortunately, Triangle of Sadness isn’t yet included on any streaming services, but it can still be rented or bought digitally. Women Talking
The final film nominated for Best Picture is Women Talking, Sarah Polley’s film that tells the story of a group of women in a secluded religious colony as they deal with the fallout of several sexual assaults. Women Talking is adapted from a book, and the possibility of a nomination made the film more popular. Women Talking is now available to stream on Prime Video (for free to Prime members) from March 9 through March 12 (ends at 9pm PT), the day the Academy Awards ceremony airs.
