Where To Watch 1973’s The Exorcist

The Exorcist is one of the most acclaimed and beloved horror movies ever made, but it’s tough to find it amidst the snowstorm of streaming services. Adapted from William Peter Blatty’s novel of the same name, The Exorcist revolves around a single mother who enlists the help of a pair of priests when her 12-year-old daughter is possessed by a demon called Pazuzu. When it arrived in theaters in 1973, The Exorcist helped to elevate the horror genre from its B-movie trappings. The blockbusting box office run of The Exorcist proved just how successful a well-made, well-received horror film could be.

After revamping the Halloween franchise with a new trilogy, David Gordon Green is shifting his sights to The Exorcist franchise with a new legacy sequel called The Exorcist: Believer. Since The Exorcist: Believer is a direct continuation of the 1973 classic, with Ellen Burstyn reprising her iconic role as Chris MacNeil, it’s important to catch up on the first movie before watching the reboot. But despite its popularity and fan base, it’s not so easy to find The Exorcist in the streaming world.

Unfortunately, The Exorcist is currently not available on any of the traditional streaming platforms like Netflix or Disney+. Since it’s a Warner Bros. property – and one of the studio’s most popular and profitable movies – it only seems like a matter of time before The Exorcist winds up in the library of Warners’ Max streaming service. But, for the time being, it’s not in the Max library. The upcoming sequel, The Exorcist: Believer, is a Universal release and will likely end up on Peacock. After the reboot revitalizes the franchise, Warners might capitalize on the franchise’s success and finally put the 1973 original on Max.

Exorcist II: The Heretic is similarly unavailable on traditional streaming services (although it can be bought or rented on Apple TV, Prime Video, Google Play, YouTube Movies, Vudu, Microsoft Store, and DirecTV). The Exorcist III is streaming on Hulu, Peacock, AMC+, Tubi, Redbox, Crackle, Shudder, Plex, and Freevee. Exorcist: The Beginning is available to buy or rent on Apple TV, Prime Video, Google Play, YouTube Movies, Vudu, and Microsoft Store. Dominion: Prequel to The Exorcist is streaming on Peacock, Vudu, Tubi, and Freevee. Both seasons of the 2016 TV adaptation of The Exorcist are available to stream on Hulu.
