Two years after it was initially announced, first-look images of Where The Crawdads Sing have finally been released. Adapted for the screen by writer Lucy Alibar (Beasts Of The Southern Wild), the upcoming film is based on Delia Owen’s New York Times best-selling novel of the same name. Produced by Sony, Reese Witherspoon also came aboard as a producer back in 2021 after selecting the novel for her book club, joining director Olivia Newman’s sophomore project.
Now, Vanity Fair has provided an exclusive first look at Where The Crawdads Sing, while also shedding light on the film’s lengthy process. The images show Normal People star Daisy Edgar-Jones as lead Kya Clark, Taylor John Smith as Tate Walker, and Harris Dickinson as Chase Andrews. Set against the lush backdrop of rural North Carolina, the images tease Where The Crawdads Sing‘s poetic blending of romance, mystery, and survival. Check out the new images below.
Following Kya from an early age into adulthood, Where The Crawdads Sing chronicles the young woman’s life as she fights to survive in a world where she has been both abandoned and shunned. Along the way, the isolated Kya becomes entangled with two young men, Tate and Chase, who each bring new and different complications into her life. Filmed in Louisiana for roughly four months, production was not only bogged down by COVID shutdowns but severe weather as well. The cast and crew had to contend with lightening storms, torrential rain, and the intense summer heat when filming out on the marshes of the North Shore. However, after such a long and tumultuous journey, Where The Crawdads Sing will finally have its theatrical premiere on July 22 and is set to be a visually stunning project.
