Where Exactly Is Dr. Halsey In Halo Season 2?

Spoilers are ahead for Halo season 2, episode 2.

Although Dr. Catherine Halsey (Natascha McElhone) is back for Halo season 2, she’s being held captive in a mysterious location. Like in the games, Dr. Halsey is the creator of the Spartan program and a top-ranking UNSC scientist. The Paramount+ show isn’t afraid to depict Halsey’s cruelty. That is, Halo‘s Dr. Halsey made the Spartans from children she abducted. After training the children as fighters, Halsey genetically engineered them to become supersoldiers. John-117 (Pablo Schreiber), a.k.a. Master Chief, is a product of Halsey’s program — and crucial to the next phase of her experiment.

In addition to laying the foundation of Halo‘s Spartan program, Dr. Halsey created the highly advanced artificial intelligence (A.I.) construct Cortana. Based on Halsey’s own brain, Cortana is meant to take the Spartan program to the next level. Ahead of Halo season 1’s ending, it’s revealed that Halsey wants Cortana to not just aid Master Chief in his battlefield decision-making, but take over his mind and body. To Halsey, John’s humanity is a flaw that’s holding him back. In the opening episodes of season 2, Halsey’s big plans are further thwarted by the mysterious circumstances of her captivity.

Dr. Catherine Halsey Is Still On Reach In Halo Season 2

The first two episodes of Halo season 2, “Sanctuary” and “Sword,” reveal that Dr. Halsey is alive in the wake of season-one’s cliffhanger ending. Branded a criminal and a threat by the UNSC and ONI, Halsey leaves a flash-clone in her wake and, seemingly, escapes the military’s reach. At the very end of season 1, Dr. Halsey’s voice-over divulges that she’s a Halo Ring fanatic who believes the artifact holds the secret to human transcendence. That said, Halo season 2 reveals that Dr. Halsey didn’t get very far.

When Dr. Halsey first appears on-screen in the sophomore outing, she’s in a modern-looking, bright-white room with immense, sunlit windows. It doesn’t look like a prison cell, but it’s clear that Halsey isn’t allowed to leave the room. When a young woman delivers some tea, Halsey agrees to teach her the ins-and-outs of backgammon. Dr. Halsey uses the opportunity to question the woman about the world outside the white room; she doesn’t know much, but does reveal that there’s a man in charge of the operation. Eventually, it’s made clear that Halsey’s still on Reach.

Why Is Ackerson Holding Halsey Captive?

Dr. Halsey (Natascha McElhone) confronts Ackerson (Joseph Morgan) in Halo season 2

Unsurprisingly, the man in charge of Halsey’s captivity is none other than Halo‘s James Ackerson (Joseph Morgan), Halsey’s replacement. The new director of the Spartan program might claim to be continuing Halsey’s work, but it’s clear he’s not too fond of the scientist. Ackerson tells the Chief, Captain Jacob Keyes (Danny Sapani), and the rest of Silver Team that Halsey should be held responsible for her crimes — if she’s even still alive. It doesn’t take viewers seeing Halsey alive and well to know that Ackerson is plotting something big, hence the web of lies.

In addition to secretly holding Halsey hostage on Reach, Ackerson has grounded Master Chief and the rest of Silver Team. The former soldier also refuses to believe John-117’s concerns about the looming Covenant threat and chalks John’s worries up to his fragile, post-Cortana mental state. After visiting Halsey in her chamber, Ackerson stops by another vault and speaks with Cortana — another secret hostage. Cortana has been running simulations, presumably about the Covenant invasion of Reach. To eliminate his rivals and paint the Spartans in a bad light, Ackerson might just be letting Reach fall on purpose.

What The Pomegranate Tree Meant In Halo Episode 2

Dr. Halsey (Natascha McElhone) stares at a fruit tree while being held captive in Halo season 2

When Ackerson visits Dr. Halsey in her chamber, it becomes increasingly apparent to the viewer that the Spartan program’s creator is trapped within some sort of virtual reality or simulation. For Halsey, the pieces click into place thanks to a rare fruit tree that’s growing in the room. As she later tells Ackerson, the tree is linked to a particular childhood memory — a recollection that no one else would know about aside from Halo‘s Cortana. That said, the tree is Halsey’s own way of deducing that she’s trapped in a virtual space at the onset of Halo season 2.
