When Smallville’s Version of Wonder Woman Finally Arrived, It Shook The TV Show’s Entire Universe

Throughout its ten season run, Smallville showed fans the origins of many more heroes than just Superman. However, despite the inclusion of their fellow Justice League allies, Clark’s best friend, Wonder Woman, was absent from the series – at least during its initial run. However, the world of Smallville didn’t end when the series finale rolled credits, and a beloved follow-up finally introduced fans, and Superman, to Themyscira’s Amazing Amazon.

The Smallville Season 11 storyline “Olympus” – by Bryan Q. Miller, Jorge Jimenez, Carrie Strachan, and Saida Temofonte – debuted Diana, as she rescued Senator Martha Kent from cultists. Soon encountered by Clark’s fiancé, Lois Lane, and attacked by Harpies, Diana teams with Superman to face the beasts.

Eventually, it would be revealed that Diana had been searching for her mother Hippolyta in Man’s World for a decade, only to discover the Queen trapped in the clutches of Felix Faust. When Faust’s machinations summon Hades, it was up to Superman and Wonder Woman to save the day.

Not only does “Olympus” canonize Diana within the Smallville universe, but it actually ends with her maintaining a prominent role in the franchise. As well as joining the TV show’s Justice League, she maintains an identity within Man’s World as Agent Prince of the D.E.O., alongside childhood friend Steve Trevor, making her an invaluable resource to her fellow heroes as well as the world. While her introduction may have been later than many fans of the series would have wanted, it doesn’t diminish Diana’s massive impact on the Smallville continuity.

Any fan of Clark or Diana knows just what the two characters mean to each other. In practically any timeline, Superman and Wonder Woman are inextricably linked as best friends and, occasionally, even lovers. The Smallville universe is no different, as this version of Diana fights alongside Clark to change the world, and even save the universe with their compatriots in the Justice League. In this way, the “Olympus” storyline fulfilled the promise of the classic Superman/Wonder Woman dynamic while allowing the character to find her own way within the continuity established by the original series.

Wonder Woman may not have appeared in the original Smallville series, but her place among the pantheon of this timeline’s greatest heroes cannot be ignored or overstated. As a key member of the Justice League, and the D.E.O., Diana’s introduction changed both the world and the Man of Steel for the better, while reminding fans of one simple truth: in almost any universe, Superman and Wonder Woman are going to fight side by side to the bitter end, in order to protect the people of Earth.
