Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is technically the fourth movie in the reboot series, but it’s set much closer to the original Planet of the Apes films. Scheduled for release on May 24, 2024, the upcoming movie follows the events of War for the Planet of the Apes, which was the epic conclusion to the story of Caesar, who led the uprising of the apes and essentially sacrificed himself for his family and his species’ freedom from the Colonel (Woody Harrelson). At the end of War for the Planet of the Apes, Maurice the Orangutan promises Caesar that his son, Cornelius, will know his name, hinting that Caesar’s legacy will continue.
While the Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes story is currently unknown, there are some indicators of what the fourquel could be about. Given that Maurice promised Caesar to raise his son, Caesar’s offspring will likely rise up and follow in his father’s footsteps, taking on humans, other ape factions who disagree with Caesar’s teachings, and other potential threats. Now, the Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes teaser trailer has been released, which doesn’t reveal much about the story or the characters, but it has given an indication that the cinematic universe is set many years after War for the Planet of the Apes.
Kingdom Is Set “Several Generations” After The Modern Planet Of The Apes Movies
Though no specific timeframe has been revealed, the YouTube description mentions that the movie is set “several generations” after the events of War for the Planet of the Apes. The Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes trailer clearly depicts how much later the fourquel is set, as apes are now Earth’s dominant species and humans seem to have devolved. Additionally, an orangutan that resembles Maurice seems to be playing with some kind of advanced technology. However, the movie’s protagonist is Cornelius, Ceasar’s son, so being set several generations after the reboot series’ first three movies comes as a surprise given that apes generally have a lifespan of around 40 years. Nevertheless, given other technology on display in the trailer, the apes may even have found a way to prolong their lives.
Is Kingdom Connected To The Classic Planet Of The Apes Movies?

As yet, there is no indication that Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is connected to the classic Planet of the Apes movies, but as so much time has passed in the cinematic universe, the upcoming movie’s period is much closer to the 1968 classic. In that respect, it’s entirely possible that Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is indeed tied to the original films, especially as Cornelius is a character in the original Planet of the Apes movie. In the 1968 film, Cornelius is Zira’s fiancee, and together they empathize with Taylor and help him escape.
The fact that the upcoming movie is set several generations after the reboot trilogy and is closer to the original series in terms of the timeline could be a big hint at the franchise’s future. While the fourquel could be connected to the classic movies, this also means that one of the films following Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes could be a straight-up remake of the original. That might come with a huge challenge given that everyone will already be anticipating one of the most famous plot twists of all time, but there’s also a chance to subvert expectations by creating an entirely new plot twist.
