When Jedi: Fallen Order Is Getting A Free Current-Gen Upgrade

Gearing up for Star Wars Day on May 4, Disney has announced a number of Star Wars video game deals and an upcoming update for Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. Owners of the PS4 or Xbox One versions of Jedi: Fallen Order will be able to upgrade to a new, current-gen version for free this summer.

Jedi: Fallen Order, a third-person action-adventure game with Soulslike mechanics and a few RPG elements, came out in late 2019 and garnered a favorable reception. The game takes place five years after Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith and follows protagonist Cal Kestis, a former Jedi Padawan who has gone into hiding now that Darth Vader and the Imperial Inquisitors are hunting down the survivors of Order 66. A playthrough takes somewhere around 20 hours to complete, and there are many collectible rewards for exploring each planet’s nooks and crannies, which could be a motivating factor for returning players looking to give the PS5 and Series X version a shot.

According to the Star Wars website, the upgrade is “coming this summer,” though no exact date has been announced. A Fallen Order PS5 and Xbox Series X/S version has been rumored before, but there was no official word until the recent announcement. While Disney didn’t yet detail anything about the upgrade’s new features beyond it including “a number of technical improvements,” even just that could be a major selling point.

How Jedi: Fallen Order Could Improve On PS5 & Xbox Series X/S

Although the gameplay and story of Jedi: Fallen Order were well received, the game had technical problems, including long load times. Having the SSDs of the new consoles to reduce these might be the most exciting part of a Fallen Order upgrade. Especially near the beginning of the game, when combat is more difficult, dying often results in waiting for a lengthy loading screen to get back to the action. The problem crops up again when traveling between planets later in the game, which forces players out of gameplay so the new scenery can be loaded.

The upgraded version of Jedi: Fallen Order will probably have other improvements too, like a higher frame rate or support for ray tracing. Perhaps extra features like haptic feedback and adaptive trigger support on the PS5’s DualSense controller could be added as well, which would bring a new level of immersion to Cal’s force powers.

The currently available versions of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order will also be on sale for the celebration of Star Wars Day; both the standard and deluxe editions will be 70% off from April 28 to May 12 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC (via Steam and Origin). Many other Star Wars games are going on sale during the same time, like Battlefront 2, Episode I Racer, Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy, and Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast.
