Wheel Of Time Weakening Rand Is Actually Good News For His Season 3 Story

The Wheel of Time has indeed downplayed Rand’s strength in the One Power, but rather than serve as a detriment, this will only make his season 3 story better. In The Wheel of Time books, Rand al’Thor’s status as the Dragon Reborn makes him the most dangerous channeler in existence. And while the show’s take on Rand is meant to have the same potential, both seasons have held back with his power level in ways that the source material didn’t.

In a notable display of his capabilities, Rand used the One Power to lay waste to an army of Trollocs in The Eye of the World. The show deviated from the books by giving this moment to Nynaeve and Egwene. Similarly, The Wheel of Time season 2’s ending didn’t allow Rand to beat Ishamael on his own; instead of defeating him in an epic duel in the clouds, Rand was defended by Egwene, who bought him time to recover. However, the show’s decision to force Rand to share the spotlight with his allies doesn’t mean this approach will also apply to later seasons.

Why Wheel Of Time Took Away Rand’s Biggest Action Scenes In The First Two Books

The Wheel of Time effectively putting restraints on Rand is a notion that’s since been acknowledged by the actor who plays him, Josha Stradowski. Stradowksi said that for the show, it was important for Rand’s friends to get these moments, as they allowed him to learn a lesson about needing help. Stradowksi also noted the need to “build it up” in regards to Rand’s story and the “skill gap” between the book and TV versions of Rand [via Decider]. This reinforces the idea that The Wheel of Time is likely saving Rand’s biggest moments for when he’s stronger.

Limiting Rand’s role in the action in its early seasons doesn’t just enable the show do more with Wheel of Time’s other characters, it also supports the show’s efforts to demonstrate his growth. As someone who’s still struggling to understand how to use the massive amount of raw power he possesses, it makes sense to refrain from utilizing his full potential. After all, had Rand easily defeated the strongest of the 13 Forsaken as early as season 2, the show might have struggled to deliver villains who feel like real threats to Rand moving forward.

After Season 2, Wheel Of Time Mustn’t Fail Rand’s Season 3 Battles

With buildup being at the heart of why he appeared weaker than the book character in seasons 1 and 2, there’s good reason to expect a great deal more from Rand in The Wheel of Time season 3. The long wait for Rand to show off what he’s capable of should go a long way toward making those moments all the more exciting. When the time comes for Rand to showcase his true strength with the One Power, this time without any help from his friends, the series can adequately pay off two full seasons of setup in epic fashion, whether it be when he inevitably claims Callandor, faces Asmodean, or perhaps during another fight entirely.
