What Zordon Really Looked Like Before Power Rangers

Power Rangers‘ Zordon is best known for his floating blue head visage as seen inside the Power Rangers’ base alongside Alpha 5, but there was a time in the Power Rangers canon when Zordon had a completely different appearance. Also known as Zordon of Eltar, Zordon fought alongside the forces of good to defeat the ruthless Rita Repulsa and various other evil entities. In addition to his perpetually ghostly floating head, audiences familiar with Zordon also remember him for his deep, booming voice that is heard anytime he rallies the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers together for another one of their action-packed missions.

While he has seen a string of actors portray the now iconic godlike figure, Zordon’s origin as a human being is still a mystery to much of the Power Rangers‘ audience. Furthermore, the instances of Zordon’s physical form that are seen throughout the series are typically done in the form of brief flashbacks, thus not really providing as much context about his previous life as one might appreciate. Nevertheless, Zordon’s human form has made appearances throughout Power Rangers since the franchise’s first series. From Mighty Morphin Power Rangers to Power Rangers Cosmic Fury, the franchise has found at least some room to touch on Zordon’s original look.

Zordon’s Appearance Before Power Rangers Explained

Jun Tatara portrays Zordon’s human form in Power Rangers Punks

Prior to Zordon adopting his now iconic floating blue head appearance that’s most commonly seen throughout the various Power Rangers media, Zordon had a human form. Played by Japanese actor Jun Tatara, Zordon’s human appearance first appeared in the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers season 1, episode 12, “Power Ranger Punks.” In the episode, Billy and Kimberly accidentally drink a mysterious concoction that one of their rivals made that turns them into delinquent versions of themselves. This not only forces Zordon to send Jason, Zack, and Trini to another dimension to find the cure, the sap contained in the singing squash, but it also provides a glimpse of Zordon’s human form.

While Zordon is breaking down where to find the singing squash and how its sap will cure Billy and Kimberly, viewers are treated to a flashback via the Command Center’s viewing globe. In it, Zordon is seen fighting a large group of members of the Putty Patrol and using the singing squash to defeat them before he is overwhelmed by their forces. Additionally, despite the fact that Zordon physically appears to be a man well into his 70s, he’y considered young by his species’ standards, as Eltarians can live for eons. While this does provide additional context about Zordon’s human appearance, it doesn’t explain how he became a giant face.

How Zordon Became A Giant Face In The Command Center

While it isn’t depicted in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, the origins of Zordon’s physical form and more importantly, how Zordon lost his body, are covered in the BOOM! Studios comic book, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #101. In the comic book, it is revealed that roughly ten thousand years before the events of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Rita Repulsa sought to conquer various galaxies, and among her limited opposition was none other than Zordon. Zordon and Rita engaged in a war that lasted thousands of years and across countless planets, which eventually saw the two seal each other away before the conclusion of their war.

Rita attempted to make her way to Earth, but Zordon was able to seal Rita and her minions inside a space dumpster atop the surface of the moon – the nearest physical structure that Zordon could find before himself being banished inside a time loop by Rita. However, before he was sealed away, Rita’s enchantment destroyed Zordon’s physical form, thus reducing him to the now famous floating blue head that audiences worldwide have become familiar with. Zordon knew he wouldn’t beat Rita, so he located five power coins, sent them to Earth’s Desert of Despair, and used them to create Earth’s newest defenders, the Power Rangers.

What Zordon Looked Like In Other Power Rangers Media

Russell Curry plays Zordon’s human form in Power Rangers Cosmic Fury

While Zordon’s most famous appearance is his floating blue head, Zordon has appeared in many different forms throughout Power Rangers. In the 1995 movie, Might Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie, Zordon is played by Nicholas Bell and voiced by Robert L. “Bob” Manahan, and is depicted as a rapidly aging and dying man as one of his rivals, Ivan Ooze, shatters his time-warp capsule. In Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #101, Zordon is depicted as a stoic, blue warrior adorned in gold Eltarian armor who is loyal to his species. Furthermore, this is the comic series in which his physical body is destroyed.

In the 2017 movie, Power Rangers, Zordon is voiced and played by Bryan Cranston, and he’s originally shown in his human-like form as the Red Ranger during the Cenozoic period fighting Rita Repulsa in her original Green Ranger form. Power Rangers is considered one of the best Power Rangers movies, and that’s largely because of Cranston’s performance as the Eltarian warrior. Most recently, Russell Curry portrayed Zordon in Power Rangers Cosmic Fury, in the form of the Rafkon knight Zayto, appearing as a human-like man with blue eyes. Zordon has had many forms, with Zordon’s blue head throughout Power Rangers easily being his most recognizable look in the history of the franchise.
