What Warhammer 40K: Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters’ Gameplay Trailer Reveals

The newest trailer for Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters reveals the title’s gameplay, giving fans taste of what to expect from the strategy RPG. As its name implies, Warhammer 40K: Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters sees the Imperium of Man primarily facing off against demons in XCOM-style, turn-based combat, much like Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus.

Warhammer 40K: Chaos Gate players assume command of a team of Grey Knights, a Space Marine chapter specifically dedicated to fighting demonic forces. Amongst the superhuman warriors of the Space Marines, the Grey Knights are unique in that are all Psykers, having access to powerful psychic abilities. In other chapters, only the Librarians are Psykers.

The new Warhammer 40K: Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters gameplay trailer kicks off with a view of a dead Imperial Guardsman, the standard trooper for the human faction. The narrator requests help from the Grey Knights, and if they are being called in, it means things are dire for the Imperium. They’ll have to contend with The Bloom, a warp plague capable of spreading disease to planets and a creation of Nurgle, the Chaos God of disease, death, and decay.

Warhammer 40K: Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters Trailer Breakdown

In addition to Warhammer 40K: Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters’ titular Demons of Nurgle – including a Great Unclean One, a Greater Daemon of Nurgle – the Grey Knights will have to battle Chaos Space Marines in the form of the Death Guard. It is possible the demons and minions of other Chaos Gods will show up later; if so, players will likely need to vary their tactics to deal with these new enemies.

Gameplay looks similar to XCOM and Warhammer 40K: Mechanicus, and the trailer shows a Grey Knight knocking over a pillar onto an enemy for an environmental kill, reminiscent of destroying the floor out from under aliens’ feet in XCOM. A ship named Baleful Edict serves as players’ upgradable mobile base. The Edict has four massive cannons on each side, indicating it is a frigate-class, one of the “smallest” of the Imperium’s warships – around a mile long and with a crew of approximately 26,000. Space Marine frigates are traditionally crewed by chapter serfs and carry a single squad of Space Marines. Since players assemble and manage a small team of Grey Knights as they travel from planet to planet, this seems appropriate.

One of the screens in the Warhammer 40K: Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters trailer shows an option for characters to return to Titan. The Grey Knights make their home on Saturn’s largest moon, so this might indicate the game’s setting is in a sector of space close to Holy Terra, though that could still mean months of travel. More details are sure to be announced as the Warhammer game’s release date approaches.

Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters will be available on PC in 2022.
