What Spider-Man’s PS5 Sequel Should Borrow From Miles Morales

What Spider-Man’s PS5 Sequel Should Borrow From Miles Morales

Although Marvel’s Spider-Man gave the wall crawler a critically acclaimed adventure on PS4, Spider-Man: Miles Morales further improved the experience. To make Spider-Man PS5 the definitive game in the series, Insomniac Games should borrow certain gameplay mechanics from Miles Morales, including some abilities previously exclusive to Miles.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales played relatively similarly to the first game, in terms of basic combat and web-swinging around the city; however, Insomniac made a few tweaks to Miles’ swinging animations, air tricks, and abilities – as well as some completely new mechanics – that made the experience more engaging. Some of these features can be incorporated into the kit of whichever Spider-person stars in the sequel, even if their general playstyles are different.

Whereas Miles uses his Venom Powers and Camouflage to boost his combat ability and make up for his lack of experience, Peter is physically stronger and has more gadgets. Peter can jump almost twice as high, create shockwaves just from punching, and ground-slam with his pure strength alone – something Miles can only do with the aid of his Venom Powers. The Spider-Man PS5 sequel should maintain these differences, but Peter and Miles could share certain gameplay mechanics in order to make both of them equally fun to play.

Spider-Man PS5 Could Give Peter The Stealth Tech He’s Longed For

While adding camouflage tech to Peter’s suit could run the risk of making him and Miles play too similarly, a few hints throughout Spider-Man PS4 already refer to Peter making a stealth suit using a special fabric. A Research Lab mission Peter can do for Harry Osborn even lets him apply cloaking tech to his suit in order to take down some rampant Oscorp military drones, though Peter notes the tech still needs improvement and interferes with his web-shooters. Spider-Man PS5 could keep this limitation in order to distinguish Peter’s cloaking from Miles’ Camouflage, especially if Peter and Miles are both playable in the same game. But the two would likely still play differently enough, even if Peter were able to perfect his own invisibility tech.

Spider-Man PS5 Should Keep Miles Morales’ More Unique Air Tricks

Adding more in-air tricks for Peter would almost certainly be a net gain. In Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Miles is given a plethora of unique tricks to do as he swings around the city, while Peter’s tricks in Spider-Man PS4 were limited to a few basic flips and twists. Some of Miles’ air tricks let him swing upside down for a few moments or even pull out his phone and text for a bit. This gives Miles a personality distinct from Peter, but perhaps hanging out with Miles would encourage Peter to come up with a few more tricks in his own style. The same could apply to Peter’s normal swinging animations, and both would make swinging around the city feel fresh again.

Spider-Man PS5’s Heroes Need Venom-Style Jump Abilities Like Miles

Miles’ Venom Jump allows him to leap mid-air, gaining extra height between swings. It’s a great way to quickly gain altitude without wall-running or swinging to the maximum height before letting go, and Peter should be given a similar ability. He already does something like it in the Kingpin takedown mission, spinning and pulling himself off the ground, but it’s never utilized in actual gameplay for the rest of the playthrough.

Spider-Man PS5 Should Keep Miles Morales’ Stealth Web Grabs

The stealth web grabs of Spider-Man: Miles Morales also put its predecessor’s to shame. In Spider-Man PS4, Peter can only stealth-web enemies while balancing on beams or ledges. Miles, on the other hand, can do so from any wall, ceiling, or ledge. This allows for a more versatile sneaking playstyle – one Peter is theoretically equally capable of.

Miles Morales’ Suit Damage System Needs To Stay In Spider-Man PS5

Spider-Man PS5 Suit Damage Peter Miles

While it doesn’t affect gameplay, Spider-Man: Miles Morales‘ suit damage system adds extra immersion. When Miles takes damage, his suit degrades alongside his health bar. In Spider-Man PS4, only certain cutscenes on the very first playthrough allow for suit damage; otherwise, Peter’s suits always stay spotless. Carrying over Miles Morales‘ dynamic suit would both make Spider-Man PS5 more cinematic and give an added visual cue to make clear when the player is taking damage.

Yuri Lowenthal, Peter Parker’s voice actor, hadn’t begun work on Spider-Man PS5 as of February 2021, suggesting the sequel isn’t on the way soon. However, both Spider-Man games heavily hinted at future storylines. If Insomniac is already working on the game, it could very well be incorporating these mechanics, likely also giving the protagonist even more abilities not seen in the original or Miles Morales.
