Killers of the Flower Moon, which premiered at the 76th Cannes Film Festival, has been met with Scorsese’s usual critical acclaim. Expectedly, it’s another winning collaboration between Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio. However, Lily Gladstone arguably gives the most impressive lead performance of the movie.

Martin Scorsese’s Next Movie After Killers Of The Flower Moon Is The Wager
Following the release of Killers of the Flower Moon, Martin Scorsese is already planning his next film, The Wager, and it will again star Leonardo DiCaprio. The director and actor have been working together since the early 2000s, with their first collaboration being 2002’s Gangs of New York. Before Killers of the Flower Moon, the actor went on to star in four other feature films by Scorsese: The Aviator, The Departed, Shutter Island, and The Wolf of Wall Street.
When Scorsese announced the project last year, it was revealed the film would be based on the David Grann novel The Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny and Murder. Grann is also responsible for writing Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI, the book Scorsese’s current film is based on.
The plot of Grann’s book of The Wager follows the investigation into what happened on a shipwrecked vessel off the coast of Chile in the 1740s. The titular Royal Navy ship had been on a secret, treasure-seeking mission when it wrecked, after which its crew mutinied. Like Killers of the Flower Moon, The Wager is based on a true story.
When Martin Scorsese’s The Wager Will Be Released
Development for Killers of the Flower Moon began in 2016, and Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio joined the project in 2017. Production was expected to begin in 2018, but there were several delays, and the film was pushed back again because of the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s unlikely it will take as long for Scorcese to make The Wager, though it likely won’t be hitting theaters anytime soon. With the WGA strike’s ending, writing for the script can begin, though Scorsese might decide to take a break after Killers of the Flower Moon before directing again.
The SAG-AFTRA strike hasn’t ended yet, so production on the film won’t be able to move forward until it does. Scorsese fans certainly shouldn’t expect to see The Wager in theaters by 2024. The director typically waits a few years to put out his next film, and the actors’ strike will only make the wait time longer. However, if the strike does end soon, the film could potentially premiere sometime in 2025. If the strike continues, this would push back production, and The Wager wouldn’t premiere until at least 2026.

However, he also told GQ in September that he really only has a “couple more” movies in him. Scorsese has also been frustrated with the lack of creativity in Hollywood. In the same GQ interview, the Killers of the Flower Moon director claimed, “The industry is over,” and with the current state of things, he isn’t wrong. No matter how much Scorsese loves creating, the end of his filmmaking career may be approaching soon.
