The 2020 film Force of Nature is an action thriller movie with a pretty strange gag that includes one character, Griffin, and his mysterious pet, which turns out to be much more dangerous than a regular house cat or golden retriever. Force of Nature follows the chaos that ensues when a pair of Puerto Rican cops tries to evacuate an apartment building during a hurricane only to stumble upon a gang of dangerous thieves in the process. The film stars Mel Gibson, Emile Hirsch, Kate Bosworth, and Stephanie Cayo.
While Force of Nature is natural disaster movie full of action and intensity, one aspect of the film that is more silly than anything is Griffin’s pet. Griffin holds up the police work of Cardillo and Peña because he insists that, before he can evacuate, he needs to feed his cat. While this request may seem normal at first, it becomes clear that Griffin’s so-called cat isn’t as typical as one might think. This is especially true when the officers enter Griffin’s apartment and find that he keeps his “cat” in a separate room, into which the cat drags him. So, what does Griffin’s pet turn out to be?
Force Of Nature’s Ending Suggests Janet Is A Tiger
Though Force of Nature never actually shows Griffin’s pet Janet to her fullest extent, the ending of the film suggests that she is a tiger. At the end of the film, the art thief John breaks into Griffin’s apartment in order to steal a painting that is worth $200 million. However, when he breaks into the room that Janet resides in, he is quickly eaten by her. Considering the fact that Griffin refers to Janet as a cat throughout the movie, and also that Janet is clearly a large animal, it makes the most sense that she would be a tiger.
Then again, Force of Nature’s Janet could also be another species of big cat. For example, Janet could be a lion, a panther, a jaguar, or a leopard. The fact that the film never shows the audience Janet leaves this fact up to interpretation. However, the most important fact about Janet, which the movie certainly does reveal, is that Janet is not your average pet cat, and more than that, she is absolutely dangerous.
Why Force Of Nature Kept Janet’s Species Hidden
Ultimately, Force of Nature kept Janet’s species hidden to maintain intrigue in the film, and also, to offer that satisfying ending where Janet eats John. If the film had revealed Janet’s species earlier in the film, it likely would not have been as exciting when John unknowingly broke into Janet’s room. The mystery would not have been there, so the excitement of John’s demise would not have been as strong. Therefore, the movie kept Janet a secret to give viewers more of a shock factor, and to keep them thinking even after the film had ended.
