What Jake Gyllenhaal Would Look Like as Batman

With the DCEU in turmoil over continued rumors that Ben Affleck is leaving (again), and rumors that there’s already a replacement in the wings, fans are left wondering what potential replacement Jake Gyllenhaal might look like in black as the Caped Crusader.

The road to Matt Reeves’ The Batman has been a particularly troubled one, and ever since Affleck stepped down as director, there have been big questions over how long he will stick around in the cape and cowl. Just recently, the Justice League actor reiterated that Bruce Wayne isn’t a role you can play forever, while Gyllenhaal is the rumored replacement that Warner Bros. has been eying if the worst comes to the worst.

Even if Affleck isn’t quite ready to depart Gotham City just yet, there is no denying that Gyllenhaal would be a suitable successor to take over the Batcave. With a potentially amazing casting decision just on the horizon, comic book fan artist BossLogic has given their rendition of Gyllenhaal suiting up.

Over the years, there have been many actors to take on the mantle of the Caped Crusader, and from Adam West’s campy ’60s version to Christian Bale’s brooding Nolanverse take, we’ve had quite the spectrum. Note that BossLogic’s costume looks to be channeling Michael Keaton’s rubberized suit from 1989’s Batman and Batman Returns, but the finished product would probably be a wholly new take. With Reeves planning a whole trilogy of Batman solo movies, he needs to know that his version of Bruce will be sticking around for the foreseeable future.

As for Gyllenhaal responding to the Bat signal, the rumors have been met with far more praise than Affleck’s casting was back in 2013. With stellar roles in the likes of Jarhead, Brokeback Mountain, and Nightcrawler, the 36-year old’s younger Batman would be more of a mainstream choice than the grizzled Batfleck. However, with Reeve’s Batman movie promising not to be a reboot or a prequel movie, it is hard to see how anyone other than Affleck would fit into the storyline.

The whole DCEU is up in the air at the moment, and with Justice League failing to light up the box office like it had hoped, the writing’s on the wall for where Geoff Johns goes next. Fans already know that Martin Scorsese is circling a Joker origin movie that would presumably ditch Jared Leto from the role, so even a recasting of someone as major as Batman wouldn’t be completely off the cards.
