What Is Percy Jackson Episode 7’s Helm Of Darkness? Hades’ Prized Possession & Its Powers Explained

Warning! This article contains spoilers for Percy Jackson and the Olympians episode 7.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians episode 7 involves Hades’ Helm of Darkness in the quest for Zeus’ Master Bolt, begging the question of what the former is and what powers it holds. One of the biggest story reveals of Percy Jackson episode 7 was that Hades was not responsible for stealing Zeus’ Master Bolt as Chiron and Dionysus suspected. Hades reveals that he does not care for the jealous disputes of Percy Jackson‘s Greek gods and does not desire the Master Bolt at all.

Instead, Hades reveals that he kept Sally Jackson in the Underworld to lure Percy there as he suspects the latter of stealing something of his. This explains why the Fury Alecto, the first of Percy Jackson‘s Greek mythological monsters in the show, attacked Percy on his school trip to New York City. The Furies were searching for something asking Percy where it was and where he had hidden it. Hades’ revelations now prove they sought an important magical item in Percy Jackson‘s world: the god of the Underworld’s Helm of Darkness.

The Helm Of Darkness Is Hades’ Symbol Of Power

In Percy Jackson, the Helm of Darkness is Hades’ symbol of power. Much like Zeus’ Master Bolt symbolizes the king of the gods’ rule and Poseidon’s trident does the same for the god of the sea’s dominion over the oceans, the Helm of Darkness solidifies Hades’ power as the king of the Underworld. Unbeknownst to anyone besides Hades before Percy Jackson and the Olympians episode 7, this helmet was stolen shortly before the Master Bolt was. While the helmet is symbolic of Hades’ power, the god of the Underworld desires its return because of the powers it grants him.

These powers have not yet been described in Percy Jackson and the Olympians, yet the original book series provides a wealth of context. The Helm of Darkness allows Hades to blend completely into shadow and darkness. While wearing it, Hades cannot be seen, touched, or heard and can pass through any solid matter. Similarly, the Helm of Darkness radiates an aura of fear that can drive people insane though only when Hades is wearing it, explaining why mortals often fear the dark.

In Percy Jackson and the Olympians episode 7, Hades accuses Percy of taking the Helm of Darkness. However, similar to the situation with Zeus’ Master Bolt, Percy is clueless as to why he is being suspected. Eventually, Percy deduces that it was Ares who stole the Master Bolt and the Helm of Darkness with the god of war conspiring with Kronos to start a war between the gods. That said, the Percy Jackson books leave one more twist in the tale.

It is revealed that Ares was being used by Kronos. Kronos hired Luke Castellan to take the Helm of Darkness, use it to steal Zeus’ Master Bolt, and give both to Ares who had no idea of Kronos’ involvement. Ares would then use them to start the war he so covets by framing Percy Jackson, only for Luke’s shoes to drag Percy, the Bolt, and the Helm into Tartarus where Kronos is rising to power. These revelations will likely be explored in Percy Jackson and the Olympians episode 8 as season 1 comes to a close.
