What Happened To The Atreides’ Planet Caladan After Dune

Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Dune: Part Two and the Dune books!

Dune: Part Two is finally here, and here is what happened to the Atreides’ planet Caladan after the events of the Dune book. Dune: Part Two wraps up the story of Frank Herbert’s critically acclaimed sci-fi novel, with it tying up the loose ends from the first Dune movie and setting the stage for Denis Villeneuve’s future Dune adaptations. Ahead of this, however, many viewers want to know the fate of some of Dune: Part Two‘s biggest storylines, including what happened to Caladan.

House Atreides is the branch of the Galactic Padishah Empire run by the Atreides family, and Caladan is their home planet. Caladan is a lush jungle planet filled with green plants and wildlife, with it being an ideal home. Caladan is known for having massive amounts of rain, juxtaposing it with the dry deserts of Arrakis.

House Atreides Lost Control Of Caladan By Moving To Arrakis

Although House Atreides maintained control of Caladan for a long time, their reign didn’t last forever. House Atreides put a lot of focus on their occupation of Arrakis, leading them to lose control of their home planet. House Atreides was ordered to give up control of Caladan by the Empire, with them instead being ordered to fully relocate to Arrakis.

After House Atreides lost control of Caladan, a new figure was placed in charge of the family’s previous home planet: Count Hasimir Fenring. Fenring held control over the planet for a while, with him and Paul having their disagreements throughout Dune‘s storyline. However, House Atreides was eventually able to regain control of Caladan after the Arrakis Revolt, restoring the Atreides family’s rule over the planet.

There was a lot going on in Dune: Part Two, and we’re here to break down all of the biggest spoilers and revelations from Denis Villeneuve’s sequel.

Gurney Halleck Is Put In Charge Of Caladan After Paul Becomes Emperor

After House Atreides retook control of Caladan, Paul Atreides became emperor. However, he was still off-planet, meaning that he couldn’t really rule Caladan. Thus, Paul trusted Gurney Halleck to rule in his absence, putting him in charge of Caladan while Paul was gone. Paul eventually returned to Caladan after a year, where he retook control of the planet.

Caladan becomes a key part of later Dune books, as Paul’s religious rule leads many of his followers to treat the planet as holy. Caladan eventually has its name simply shortened to Dan, although much of the planet is preserved due to its importance to the legacy of Paul Atreides. There is still lots of story to tell regarding Caldan after the events of Dune: Part Two, and hopefully more of this arc will be explored if a Dune: Messiah movie ever happens.
