What Happened To Lover, Stalker, Killer’s Liz Golyar

What Happened To Lover, Stalker, Killer’s Liz Golyar

Netflix’s documentary Lover, Stalker, Killer chronicles a love triangle gone horribly wrong, with many twists and turns that made the case more complicated than it seemed, and at the center of it was Liz Golyar. Netflix’s catalog of true-crime documentaries keeps expanding, and among its most recent additions is Lover, Stalker, Killer. The documentary takes viewers back to 2012 to meet Dave Kroupa, a recently divorced auto mechanic who started dating housekeeper Liz Golyar after meeting her on a dating website.

Kroupa and Golyar agreed to be non-exclusive, and one day, Kroupa met Cari Farver, and after coming across her on the same dating website, they began seeing each other. Just two weeks into his (also non-exclusive) relationship with Farver and a strange text message from her, Farver disappeared and Kroupa and Golyar became the targets of endless harassment that quickly escalated to dangerous levels. Lover, Stalker, Killer has a huge plot twist as Liz wasn’t the victim and was, instead, the one responsible for Farver’s murder and the entire nightmare Kroupa, his family, and Farver’s family went through for years.

Liz Golyar Was Sentenced To Life In Prison For Cari Farver’s Murder

Despite the agreement between all parties involved about a non-exclusive relationship, what set Golyar’s horrific plans into motion was a supposedly “casual” encounter the night Kroupa and Farver went to the former’s apartment, as Golyar showed up to get something from his apartment. Kroupa mentions in Lover, Stalker, Killer that Golyar and Farver made very brief eye contact when Farver passed Golyar on her way out.

One day, and after Farver had been staying at Kroupa’s house as it was closer to her work, Kroupa received a strange message from Farver’s phone saying they should move in together, despite the agreement they had. After rejecting the idea, Kroupa began to receive several messages harrassing and threatening him, and Farver began stalking him. Not long after, Golyar got the same type of messages and started being stalked, to the point where the stalker broke into her house and burned it down, sadly killing all of her pets.

To everyone’s surprise, Farver wasn’t the stalker and it was actually Golyar, who had been stalking Kroupa and his family for years, sending all those messages to him, his ex-wife, herself, and even some to Farver’s mother pretending to be her. Golyar went as far as to burn her own house to blame Farver and shot herself in the leg and blamed Kroupa’s ex-wife, but all her lies were eventually caught by the authorities. Golyar was found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole, with an additional 18 to 20 years for second-degree arson (via People).

Where Is Liz Golyar Now?

Liz Golyar is serving her sentence at the Nebraska Correctional Center for Women, and in 2018, she unsuccessfully appealed her conviction (via FindLaw). According to ABC News in 2020, Golyar maintains her innocence, still claims Farver’s real killer is out there, and says she will “not stop fighting” until she’s free. As for Dave Kroupa, he still lives in Nebraska and is rebuilding his life after all those horrible years chronicled in Lover, Stalker, Killer.
