What Does Annabeth Regret? Why She Was Trapped In The Asphodel Fields In Percy Jackson Episode 7

Warning! This article contains spoilers for Percy Jackson and the Olympians episode 7.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians episode 7 sees Annabeth tethered to the Fields of Asphodel for a regret she has in her life; what exactly is this regret and how did she escape? After the crucial story reveals of Percy Jackson episode 6, Percy, Annabeth, and Grover made their way to the Underworld’s secret entrance in Los Angeles. This saw them come into a brief conflict with another of Percy Jackson‘s demigod characters: Procrustes, another son of Poseidon and Percy’s half-brother.

After encountering several of Percy Jackson‘s Greek mythological creatures including Cerberus and Charon who guard the Underworld, the trio finds themselves in the Fields of Asphodel. The Fields of Asphodel are described as the place where souls are tethered if they died regretting a choice they either did or did not make in life. This leads to some big story reveals for Percy Jackson episode 7 involving Annabeth as the daughter of Athena begins to be tethered by the roots of Asphodel herself.

Annabeth Likely Regrets Thalia’s Demise In Percy Jackson & The Olympians

Interestingly, Percy Jackson and the Olympians episode 7 does not reveal what choice Annabeth regrets that forces her to be rooted in Asphodel. The character uses one of Poseidon’s Pearls to escape her entrapment before being able to reveal this choice, though several hints from Percy Jackson season 1’s past episodes can help provide context for the reveal. One such potentiality for what Annabeth regrets is the death of Thalia Grace which was mentioned in the opening episodes of Percy Jackson season 1.

It was revealed in Percy Jackson episodes 2 and 3 that Thalia was a traveling companion of Luke and Annabeth. As the trio traveled to Camp Half-Blood, Thalia sacrificed herself to allow her friends to reach safety before Zeus took pity on his daughter and transformed her into the protective pine tree that sits atop Half-Blood Hill. Given the circumstances of Thalia’s sacrifice, it stands to reason that Annabeth would feel some regret for not being able to save the person she looked up to as a sister.

Another potential aspect of her life that Annabeth may regret is her family life. In Percy Jackson episode 4, she mentioned that she ran away from home at a young age due to her dad’s mortal family. It could be the case that Annabeth regrets running away without trying harder to make her home life work or that she regrets not getting in touch with her dad more recently.

Annabeth Getting Stuck In The Fields Of Asphodel Is A Major Book Change

What makes this sequence in Percy Jackson episode 7 all the more interesting is that it is not found in the original book. In Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, Annabeth, Grover, and Percy all make it through the Asphodel Fields together and make it to Hades’ palace safely. As shown in Percy Jackson episode 7, this is not the case as Annabeth leaves Grover and Percy to escape Asphodel’s grasp.

This change was likely made to add more stakes to the episode as Annabeth is not present to help Percy and Grover with Hades. Also, it adds depth to Annabeth’s character as the regret she holds will likely be explored in the future. Furthermore, the book encounter with Hades was written similarly in that Percy leaves without his mother meaning Annabeth is not necessarily needed for that scene. Therefore, including a tension-filled sequence that also furthers Annabeth’s character in Percy Jackson and the Olympians episode 7 makes a lot of storytelling sense.
