We’re Totally Getting An X-Men Announcement At SDCC Now, Right?

We’re Totally Getting An X-Men Announcement At SDCC Now, Right?

Warning! Spoilers ahead for the Ms. Marvel finale.

Marvel Studios must be gearing to finally announce an X-Men project at San Diego Comic-Con 2022. Ever since its Iron Man panel in 2007, MCU’s presentations at Hall H have become one of the most anticipated parts of SDCC. The franchise has skipped the event a few times, the latest of which was in the last two years as SDCC moved to a virtual setting due to the coronavirus pandemic. Now, however, Marvel Studios is gearing for a comeback as it has officially announced that the MCU will be at SDCC 2022.

On the heels of the Infinity Saga’s end, the MCU laid out its Phase 4 plans during SDCC 2019. Marvel Studios’ first wave of Disney+ series, as well as, several movies were announced. The release of Thor: Love and Thunder mean all projects that were publicized then have already been released, making the franchise’s SDCC 2022 panel intriguing. If that’s not exciting enough, Ms. Marvel finale’s mutant reference may have just made it so much more interesting.

In the Ms. Marvel finale, Bruno Carrelli (Matt Lintz) informs Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) has “some sort of mutation” in her genes that enhances her powers. While Marvel Studios has dropped clues about the existence of the X-Men in the MCU, this is the most explicit reference that they have given thus far to the mutants, hinting that Ms. Marvel may be the MCU’s first mutant. If that isn’t enough, the X-Men ’97’s theme is also playing in the background during this scene. This revelation is a perfectly timed lead-in to Marvel Studios’ possible announcement of an X-Men project at San Diego Comic-Con 2022 which is just a little over a week away. This unmistakable set-up in Ms. Marvel can not be simply ignored knowing how popular the mutants are and Marvel Studios is well aware of this. With SDCC coming up, it’s likely that they have already presumed that questions about it would be fielded at the event, giving them the perfect opportunity to finally confirm the arrival of the X-Men in the MCU.

Will X-Men Really Be Announced At Comic-Con 2022?

We’re Totally Getting An X-Men Announcement At SDCC Now, Right?

With all of Marvel Studios’ previously confirmed Phase 4 shows and movies already out and only four films dated, the franchise is due for another slate announcement. This means that it will lay out its next batch of projects scheduled to release starting in late 2023. Depending on how far ahead in their storytelling Marvel Studios is willing to reveal at this point, it’s likely that the much-anticipated X-Men project will already be part of the Marvel Studios’ next SDCC panel. Between Ms. Marvel‘s finale reveal and all the other string of mutant references in Phase 4, it doesn’t seem like the franchise is waiting long to officially introduce the fan-favorite characters. For what it’s worth, Kevin Feige already name-dropped them in SDCC 2019 which means that they have long figured out how to incorporate the X-Men into the MCU. They’re just waiting for the perfect opportunity to publicize it.

Admittedly, it’s possible that the X-Men reboot project can be announced through other avenues. After all, there’s also the D23 Expo and even Disney Investor’s Day which have been both used to confirm upcoming MCU endeavors before. That being said, Marvel Studios knows better than to miss the chance to make a big splash out of this big news during SDCC, especially on the heels of Ms. Marvel‘s finale. So, it makes so much more sense for Feige and his team to choose to unveil their plans for the mutants, including possible casting choices during the annual San Diego event.

Ms. Marvel season 1 is now available to stream on Disney+.
