“We’re Running Out of Energon”: Transformers’ New Continuity Confirms the Autobots Are Struggling to Survive on Earth

WARNING! Spoilers ahead for Transformers #2

The Transformers are back, and the franchise’s Energon Universe era has officially begun. The first issue of the series from writer/artist Daniel Warren Johnson has been released, and now fans can get a look at where the story is going with a preview for Transformers #2. Featuring the introduction of a few Autobots in the new continuity, the issue promises to be rife with first appearances in the Energon Universe.

Released directly to Skybound’s website, the preview by Daniel Warren Johnson, Mike Spicer and Rus Wooten picks up where Transformers #1 left off, with Spike Witwicky and his girlfriend Carly helping Optimus Prime and the remaining Autobots following an attack by the Decepticons.

Based on the preview, Wheeljack will also debut in Transformers #2 as well, with more bots continuing to be restored to life as the series progresses. The preview highlights the desperate situation Optimus and his fellow Autobots are in, as they fight for their existence on a planet far away from their homeworld of Cybertron. After destroying their ship’s computer, Teletraan I, the Autobots are left to the mercy of Prime’s trailer to repair and re-awaken their fellow bots, but limited resources mean there are only so many they can revive. “I used the last bit of our stored Energon to fix Cliff,” Ratchet explains, “There’s not enough for anyone else.

With the help of Spike Witwicky and his girlfriend Carly, it appears the Autobots will be searching Earth for caches of Energon. As seen at the end of Transformers #1, the Decepticons have already begun their search for Energon on Earth, making themselves known as Starscream attacks the local power plant where Spike’s dad “Sparkplug” Witwicky works. Judging from the main cover by Daniel Warren Johnson and Mike Spicer, Starscream will soon be taking to the skies, to deal with a squad of jet fighters sent to handle the situation – one of whom is strongly hinted to be none other than Conrad S. Hauser, aka “Duke” from G.I. Joe.

As Duke #1 hits stores the following month in December and looks to pick things up right where Transformers #2 leaves off, the Energon Universe is heating up rather quickly with its G.I. Joe/Transformers shared continuity. Considering that the Cobra Commander series launching next January will focus on the Commander scouring the Earth for “the mysterious substance known as Energon,” it surely won’t be long before the Decepticons cross paths with the nascent Cobra organization in the new continuity. The battle lines are being drawn and the stakes have never been higher, as the Transformers find themselves fighting for their very survival in the Energon Universe.

Transformers #2 is on sale November 8, 2023 from Skybound Entertainment.
