Earth’s Mightiest couldn’t be topped at the box office this weekend, taking advantage of a weak group of competitors.
In the top spot again is Avengers: Age of Ultron, which grossed $77.2 million in its second weekend. That is the second-highest second weekend intake of all-time, trailing only its predecessor ($103.1 million). Despite having not much to go against, the latest outing for Marvel’s super team took a 59.6 percent dive from its massive debut, though such decreases are expected for “event” films like this. Ultron is already the second highest-grossing movie of the year so far with $312.5 million domestically and it’s only a matter of time when it overtakes the top spot. Internationally, the sequel is at $874.9 million, so this is another big win for Marvel.
Coming in a distant second is the comedy Hot Pursuit (read our review), which had a tough time overcoming the slew of negative reviews it received ahead of its release on Friday. The Reese Witherspoon/Sofia Vergara vehicle managed just $13.3 million from more than 3,000 locations – which is only a $4,400 per theater average. Falling way short of expectations, the movie was not able to emerge as a viable counter-programming option and it is unlikely its fortune will turn around in the coming weeks. In addition to reviewers, audiences haven’t been responding favorably to the film, so it most likely is doomed.
In at #3 is The Age of Adaline, making $5.6 million in its third weekend. The film is now at $31.5 million domestically.
Furious 7 finishes #4 with $5.2 million. The action sequel has now made $338.4 million Stateside, holding on to its title of #1 film in America for one more week before The Avengers swoop in and take it from Dom Toretto and family.
Rounding out the top five this weekend is Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2. The comedy sequel added $5.1 million to its domestic total, which is now at $58 million. That is considerably less than the 2009 original at the same point in its run, making a Paul Blart 3 improbable.
Indie sci-fi drama Ex Machina checks in at #6 this week, grossing $3.4 million. Thanks to a combination of an increased marketing presence and more theater locations (725 were added this week), the film continues to perform respectably. It has now made $15.7 million through five weeks of release.
The #7 film this week is Home. The latest from DreamWorks is now at $162.1 million after making $3 million over the weekend.
Drama The Woman in Gold is #8 with an intake of $1.6 million. The film has now made $26.9 million domestically.
Cinderella is the #9 film after making $1.5 million. The fairy tale reimagining is now at $196.1 million.
Finishing out the top ten is Unfriended. The horror film has grossed $30.9 million total after bringing in $1.4 million over the weekend.
