A YA adaptation wins the box office again, while Tom Cruise struggles to strike a chord with domestic audiences.
In at number 1 is The Fault in Our Stars (read our review) with a very impressive $48.2 million debut. Heading into the weekend it looked like the film, based on the best-selling novel by John Green, would do well, but few expected a near-$50 million opening.
The film did slip some over the weekend, a likely byproduct of that initial Friday night rush, but that surge was more than enough to push this film past profitability and into box office hit territory. That’s 2-for-2 for Shailene Woodley with both this and Divergent ($54M) opening to very strong box office numbers.
Maleficent dropped to the number 2 spot this weekend with $33 million. The Angelina Jolie-led film, a loose adaptation of Sleeping Beauty, did well considering the competition and is now up to $127 million. Again, we’re not looking at Alice in Wonderland-type numbers here, but Maleficent‘s success should help secure the continuation of Disney live action adaptations for the foreseeable future.
Coming in at number 3 is Edge of Tomorrow (read our review) with $29.1 million. While studios are not yet ready to call this one a disappointment, it’s pretty clear that the Tom Cruise blockbuster is under-performing. It could be summer fatigue or the confusing marketing, but something didn’t quite draw audiences like Warner Bros. was expecting.
On the international front, Edge of Tomorrow is aligning much closer with expectations, proving that Tom Cruise still has a huge fan base around the globe. Thus far, Edge of Tomorrow has grossed $111 million internationally.
The number 4 film this weekend is X-Men: Days of Future Past with $14.7 million, which brings its domestic total up to $189 million and its worldwide total up to $609 million. We’ve already brought word that DOFP is the highest grossing X-Men film in the franchise (worldwide), but the film is also inching closer to X-Men: The Last Stand‘s $234M domestic total, which would make it the most successful X-film across the board. Either way, the film is doing very well for itself, and is already the 5th highest grossing film of the year.
Rounding out the top 5 is A Million Ways to Die in the West with $7.1 million. Now at $30 million, Seth MacFarlane’s sophomore effort is clearly not destined for Ted-like numbers. In fact, A Million Ways may end up being one of this summer’s bigger flops
In at number 6 is Godzilla with $5.9 million. The return of the giant lizard has been a huge success for Warner Bros. both domestically and worldwide. At $185M domestic, Godzilla is currently the 4th highest gross film of the year. Internationally, the film has grossed $208 million after four weeks.
The number 7 film is Neighbors with $5.2 million. The R-rated comedy continues to hang around in the top 10 and has now grossed $137 million.
Blended falls to number 8 this weekend with $4 million, bringing its total up to $36 million. Right now it appears Adam Sandler is looking at one of his lowest totals for a PG-13 rated film, below such “classics” as Jack and Jill ($74M) and Just Go With It ($103M).
Jon Favreau’s latest film Chef comes in at number 9 with $2.6 million. The film expanded to over 1,000 screens this weekend and jumped up about 36% as a result. After 5 weeks in limited release, Chef is now at $10 million.
Rounding out the top 10 is Million Dollar Arm with $1.8 million. The Disney sports drama has grossed $31 million after four weeks.
