Kevin Hart continues his 2014 box office dominance, while the latest from Clint Eastwood struggles.
In at number 1 is Think Like a Man Too (read our review) with $30 million. That’s two in a row for director Tim Story and star Kevin Hart, who struck box office pay dirt earlier this year with Ride Along.
As far as the sequel goes, Think Like a Man Too is right on par with its predecessor and should enjoy a decent box office run. Also, if you’re a big studio looking for a bankable star, look no further than Kevin Hart.
22 Jump Street is the number 2 film this weekend with $29 million. The Phil Lord and Chris Miller-directed comedy sequel held strong in its second weekend and is already up to $111 million. Not only that, but 22 Jump Street is well on its way to surpassing Neighbors ($145M) for the title of biggest comedy of 2014.
Not far behind is How to Train Your Dragon 2 with $25.3 million. Some expected the animated sequel to leapfrog 22 Jump Street in its second weekend, but that wasn’t the case. Still, HTTYD 2 is on a similar pace to its predecessor with $95 million in domestic grosses and $171 million worldwide.
Coming in at number 4 is Jersey Boys (read our review) with $13.3 million. Clint Eastwood’s adaptation of the Tony Award-winning musical simply couldn’t generate the type of buzz that Warner Bros. hoped for when they first announced the project.
Although Jersey Boys‘ opening is below the average for movie musicals, it’s actually much higher than your average Eastwood-directed picture. Unfortunately, this was a much wider release than most of Eastwood’s prior flicks.
Rounding out the top 5 is Maleficent with $13 million. Disney’s live-action fairy tale picture is still holding well in its fourth week. So far, Maleficent has grossed $185 million domestic and $521 million worldwide.
In at number 6 is Tom Cruise’s sci-fi action flick Edge of Tomorrow with $10.3 million. Although Edge of Tomorrow held much better in its third week, it’s still well below expectations with $74 million thus far. Overseas, however, the film is hitting all the right notes with $292 million so far.
The number 7 film this weekend is The Fault in Our Stars with $8.6 million. Had the film held a little stronger last weekend it might be looking at a $120M+ total, but as it stands, The Fault in Our Stars has raked in an impressive $98 million.
X-Men: Days of Future Past comes in at number 8 with $6.2 million. As we mentioned last week, Days is on the cusp of taking the top spot internationally with $475 million, but it still has some work to do here in the States. Thus far, X-Men: Days of Future Past has grossed $216 million.
Coming in at number 9 is old reliable, Chef, with $1.84 million. The film continues to hold strong, despite dropping about 100 screens from last weekend, and is now up to $16 million.
Rounding out the top 10 is Godzilla with $1.82 million. With $194 million domestic and $477 million worldwide, it’s pretty safe to say that Warner Bros’ fears we might have another Pacific Rim were unfounded. Godzilla clearly sells in all territories.
