On the final weekend before the summer movie season kicks off in earnest, the domestic box office takes a bit of of a dip.
Coming in at number 1 is Pain & Gain (read our review) with $20 million. Michael Bay’s first low-budget ($26 million) movie in a long time opened strong on Friday, but could not sustain that performance through the weekend.
Whether it was the R-rating or a lack of CG robots, something about Pain & Gain did not seem to appeal to audiences. Despite a relatively weak opening weekend – especially for a Michael Bay-directed film – Pain & Gain should easily turn a profit, thanks to the low budget.
Oblivion drops down to number 2 this weekend with $17 million. Tom Cruise’s sci-fi blockbuster is still going strong with $64 million in domestic grosses, and $198 million worldwide.
The Jackie Robinson biopic 42 comes in at number 3 with $10 million, which brings its domestic total up to $69 million. 42 has far exceeded expectations at the box office, and is the highest grosser of this year’s April releases.
The Big Wedding (read our review) opens in the number 4 spot this weekend with $7 million. It’s strange to think that an R-rated comedy starring Robert De Niro, Susan Sarandon, and Robin Williams couldn’t muster up a better opening weekend, but overwhelmingly negative reviews and little to no marketing likely hurt the film’s potential. Even so, The Big Wedding might clear its $35 million production budget when all is said and done… but not by much.
The Croods rounds out the top 5 with $6 million, which brings its domestic total up to $163 million. Although the animated comedy finally surrendered the number 3 spot after holding it hostage for several weeks, it only dropped 28% from last week.
Coming in at number 6 is G.I. Joe: Retaliation with $3.6 million, which brings its domestic total up to $116 million. While Retaliation is unlikely to surpass the first G.I. Joe ($150 million) in terms of domestic box office grosses, the sequel has already bested its predecessor with $349 million in worldwide grosses.

Scary Movie 5 is the number 7 film this weekend with $3.4 million. The parody sequel has made $27 million over 3 weeks.
In the number 8 spot is Olympus Has Fallen with $2.76 million. The film is inching ever-closer to the $100 million mark, but is still $7 million away.
The Place Beyond the Pines comes in right behind Olympus with $2.69 million. Derek Cianfrance’s ensemble drama is now up to $16 million in domestic grosses.
Rounding out the top 10 is Jurassic Park 3D with $2.3 million, which brings its domestic total up to $42 million. The first Jurassic Park film as a whole now has a lifetime domestic gross of $399 million. With $1 million more, not only will the film cross the $400 million mark, but the 3D re-release will pass The Phantom Menace 3D for second all-time among live action 3D re-releases.
Outside the top 10: Jeff Nichols’ coming-of-age film Mud (read our review) opened with $2.1 million on 363 screens ($6,022/screen), and a little film called Iron Man 3 broke several international box office records with an estimated $195.3 million opening.
