With newcomers underwhelming, the road was clear for Disney to repeat as box office champion, and they took advantage of the minimal competition.
Coming at #1 again is The Jungle Book, which made $60.8 million in its second weekend. That’s just a 41.1 percent drop from its opening, a very strong hold. The latest from director Jon Favreau has clearly benefited from the positive word-of-mouth and its position as a technological marvel that demands to be seen on the biggest of screens. Thanks to its reception and cross-generational appeal, it has found great success commercially, making the decision to green light a sequel an easy one for the Mouse House. Their Jungle Book has brought in $191.4 million domestically so far, and $528.4 million globally.
Opening in second is The Huntsman: Winter’s War (read our review) with just $20 million in its first three days. That’s a considerable decline from the $56.2 million its predecessor, Snow White and the Huntsman, made when it debuted in 2012. Even though Huntsman had considerable star power with names like Chris Hemsworth, Emily Blunt, Jessica Chastain, and Charlize Theron, the roster of A-listers could not overcome the largely negative critical reaction, which gave casual audiences little reason to check this one out. With Jungle Book still going strong, Huntsman had its work cut out for it, and it struggled to find an audience. It did receive a small boost from the international markets, as its worldwide total is $100.2 million. Still, it has a long way to go to turn a profit, and it’ll most likely fall off quickly.
Coming in third is comedy sequel Barbershop: The Next Cut. The film made $10.8 million in its second weekend, a 46.5 percent decrease from its opening. Its domestic gross is now at $36 million.
Zootopia is the #4 film, making $6.6 million in its eighth weekend. Disney’s animated smash continues to hold very well (despite direct competition for the family demographic from Jungle Book) and is now up to $316.4 million in the States.
Melissa McCarthy’s The Boss rounds out the top five with $6 million. The comedy has made $49.5 million domestically at this point in its run.
In sixth is Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. Zack Snyder’s superhero epic made $5.5 million in its fifth weekend, raising its domestic total to $319.5 million. Globally, the film has brought in $851.6 million – more than the $800 million it had to bring in to turn a profit. The debate about its box office performance will continue to rage on, but Warner Bros. still has to be somewhat pleased with the way it turned out.
At #7 is Criminal. The film made $3.1 million in its second weekend and has only brought in $10.8 million domestically.
The #8 film this week is My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, which made $2.1 million to increase its domestic total to $55.3 million.
Debuting in ninth is Compadres, which opened in just 368 locations. The action flick grossed $1.3 million in its first three days.
Finishing off the top 10 is A Hologram for a King. Like Compadres, this film had a very limited release (401 theaters), but still managed to attract a decent crowd. It made $1.1 million in its first three days.
