Wednesday Season 2: Cast, Plot & Everything We Know

Wednesday Season 2: Cast, Plot & Everything We Know

The first season of Jenna Ortega and Tim Burton’s reimagining of Wednesday Addams was a runaway success for Netflix, and Wednesday season 2 news for the Addams Family spinoff have been coming in steadily since it was greenlit. Directed by Tim Burton, Wednesday’s first season follows Wednesday Addams as she’s sent to Nevermore Academy, a boarding school for supernatural “outcasts.” Season 1 primarily consists of the title character learning to adjust to her new school while solving a murder mystery that impacted her parents 30 years ago. While the series surrounds the coming-of-age story of Jenna Ortega’s Wednesday, the spooky members of the iconic Addams family are still integral to the murderous plot.

Wednesday Addams may have already solved season 1’s main mystery by exposing Tyler as the Hyde monster and Ms. Thornhill, A.K.A. Laurel Gates, as the vengeful outcast killer, but Wednesday’s season 1 ending hints that there’s still more story to tell. Wednesday’s season 1 finale makes sure to leave a few burning questions unanswered and loose ends untied, as Jenna Ortega’s gothic character has already made enemies through her murder investigation. As such, it’s more than likely that Wednesday will discover more Addams Family secrets and investigate her new stalker in another season. Here is all the Wednesday season 2 news, including the potential release date, story, and cast.

The Latest Wednesday Season 2 News

Wednesday Season 2: Cast, Plot & Everything We Know

The most recent Wednesday season 2 news comes from the series’ costume designer Colleen Atwood, who has revealed that the Addams Family Mansion will have a much bigger role in the next season. Atwood explained, “Season 2 she’ll have a lot of looks, so it’ll be really fun to see what Morticia does when she’s you know out of the dress and into around-the-house looks.” While Morticia and Gomez only appeared in two episodes of Wednesday season 1 despite being total scene-stealers, the costume designer’s comments also hint that Morticia and possibly other members of the family will have much more prominent roles too.

That fact that Morticia will have a whole wardrobe of costumes in Wednesday season 2 suggests that her role will be way more influential than in season 1. However, Atwood’s comments also hint at something that hasn’t been seen all that much in any previous iteration of The Addams Family. Morticia’s black gown was all she wore in the two episodes of Wednesday, and she has rarely ever worn anything else. Morticia dressing in anything other than the gown subtly breaks new ground for the long-running IP, but whether Atwood is referring to casual clothing or sports attire it’ll likely still have a Morticia Addams twist to the style (and will most likely be all black).

Wednesday Season 2 is Confirmed

The Wednesday season 2 news earlier in the production cycle seemed to spell danger for Netflix, who’s keen to keep Wednesday as part of their core original content. While Netflix wanted more Addams Family shows and Wednesday was a massive success, something happened outside of Netflix’s control. Amazon acquired MGM and Addams Family is owned by MGM. This made it look like Prime Video could sweep in and pick up the series, taking it away from Netflix. However, Netflix kept hold of the fantasy series, and possibly the shared universe that it wanted to build around her.

While Wednesday season 2 is confirmed, the development of the series will be markedly different. Other Wednesday season 2 news promises Jenna Ortega taking a bigger role in the production going forward. In a recent roundtable interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Ortega revealed that she will serve as a producer on the second season of the show. She revealed that the aim behind this is to create a more collaborative approach to the show, saying “I think a project is best when there’s as many voices and ideas thrown out as possible.”

Ortega’s comments about changing Wednesday lines during the first season got a lot of attention. However, the actor spoke in the roundtable interview about feeling unheard and overlooked on past projects leading to her voicing her own opinions more strongly on Wednesday. It is not unusual for the stars of shows to work alongside writers to share their thoughts and having Ortega in the producer role will ensure she is able to have a more hands-on role in those decisions during the production of Wednesday season 2.

Wednesday Season 2 (Predicted) Release Date

Although the gap between seasons of Netflix original shows varies, the Wednesday season 2 release date can be predicted based on the production timeline of season 1. Netflix officially ordered Wednesday season 1 in February 2021, with the show beginning filming in September 2021. Wednesday premiered a little over a year after filming began. There’s currently no word on when filming will being for Wednesday season 2 or if the season is even written yet, so it won’t likely premiere until some point in 2024 at the earliest. It is likely there won’t be any Wednesday season 2 news concerning the filming until after the WGA strike ends.

Wednesday Season 2 Cast

Wednesday Addams, Larissa Weems, and Xavier Thorpe.

Wednesday season 1’s main cast would likely return for the Wednesday season 2 cast, including Jenna Ortega as Wednesday, Emma Myers as Enid, Percy Hynes White as Xavier, Joy Sunday as Bianca, and Moosa Mostafa as Eugene. One actor who likely wouldn’t return sadly is Gwendoline Christie, whose character Larissa Weems was killed in the finale. Wednesday season 2 would likely see the returns of Catherine Zeta-Jones, Luis Guzmán, Isaac Ordonez, Fred Armisen, and George Burcea who play Morticia, Gomez, Pugsley, and Fester Addams, as well as Lurch, respectively.

Since the fate of Christina Ricci’s character Laurel Gates was left ambiguous, it’s unclear whether the 1990s Addams Family film’s Wednesday actress will return in the Wednesday season 2 cast. However, there might be some good news for fans of Ricci. In an interview, the actor said that she would gladly return to the show for its second season. However, she wouldn’t give any solid Wednesday season 2 news, saying, “I don’t think I’m allowed to say. On my end, the door is open. She was so fun to play! It’s always so fun to play a villain.

There’s also been the confirmation that a new member of the Addams family will be introduced in the Wednesday season 2 cast. There’s no news yet on who that could be, much less who will play them in the Wednesday season 2 cast. If it’s Cousin Itt, the gibber-spouting mop of hair wearing a bowler hat, the Wednesday season 2 cast could have an incredibly surprising addition. While Cousin Itt has no understandable voice lines, he was played by Snoop Dogg in the most recent Addams Family animated movies. If Wednesday season 2 includes Cousin Itt then the Netflix series could well do the same with a trivia-worthy casting choice.

Wednesday Season 2 Story Details

There’a very few Wednesday season 2 news concerning the plot. However, the season 1 finale features several different loose ends, so the Netflix series will likely contain another murder mystery. In Wednesday’s season 1 ending, Wednesday returned home for summer break only to receive threatening texts. The texts include images of Wednesday speaking to Tyler in the coffee shop and Xavier giving her a new phone, with Wednesday surmising that she now has her own nefarious stalker. Wednesday’s season 1 finale thus sets up a mysterious foe for the title character in season 2, suggesting Joseph Crackstone’s plan to eradicate outcasts isn’t entirely over.

The final sequence of season 1 reveals Tyler can still turn into a Hyde, which hints he’ll come back for revenge in the Wednesday season 2 story. The first season teased a potential romance between Wednesday Addams and Xavier Thorpe, which could finally come to fruition in Wednesday season 2 with Tyler captured. Additionally, Wednesday season 1 never gave a definitive answer on whether Bianca Barclay would be returning to Nevermore Academy, with a second season presumably better exploring her mother’s cult.

In some fun news, though, Luis Guzmán said Gomez would do some dancing and sword fighting (via DevDiscourse), which could take place in the Addams Family Mansion or on the mansion grounds. As costume designer Colleen Atwood hinted at the mansion having a much bigger role, it’s likely that a lot of the family members will have much bigger roles, and their hijinks in the mansion will be on full display. With Morticia being dressed in around-the-house clothing, audiences will likely see what this iteration of the family get up to in a more relaxed setting.

Wednesday Season 2 Trailer

There likely won’t be a Wednesday season 2 trailer until shooting is finished. This means fans shouldn’t expect a trailer until late 2023 at the earliest. However, while Netflix won’t have a trailer anytime soon, the streamer did release a short video clip to hold viewers over. The video had a voiceover of Wednesday Addams saying, “I’ve been hunted, haunted, and mimicked millions of times across the internet. It’s been pure torture. Thank you,” then confirmed her return for season 2.
