Watch Dogs: Legion Online Mode One Step Closer After New Update

Developer Ubisoft Toronto has deployed Title Update 3.0 on PC for Watch Dogs: Legion, a patch that means to prepare the game for the eventual release of its online mode. Ubisoft originally intended to unleash Watch Dogs: Legion’s multiplayer functionality closer to the main game’s late 2020 arrival. However, Legion’s Online Mode was delayed so developers could focus their efforts on addressing bug fixes.

This Watch Dogs entry doesn’t necessarily follow in the footsteps of its two predecessors. Instead of assuming the role of a single character like Aiden Pearce or Marcus Holloway, players have access to a vast network of characters. So ambitious is Watch: Dogs Legion’s premise that players can take control of any character in the game-world. Interestingly, the inventive technology powering Legion is capable of generating unique details about each character, too, including their name, backstory, and skills. Though the title’s recruitment system isn’t as monumental as players may have hoped, the multiplayer component could very well use the mechanic in a compelling manner.

Watch Dogs: Legion‘s Title Update 3.0 just hit PC to lay the groundwork for Online Mode. According to patch notes on Ubisoft Forums, the 10 to 15GB update introduces a variety of fixes and improvements, in addition to files that will be used in the Online Mode’s closed technical test. The technical test should help developers assess service stability and prepare the game for as smooth of an online launch as possible. As of writing, Ubisoft Toronto hasn’t announced when it plans to deploy Title Update 3.0 on consoles. Watch Dogs: Legion Online Mode still lacks a firm release date, as well.

This update suggests Online Mode remains on track for its previously stated early 2021 arrival, which should introduce co-op and PvP modes. Co-op will take the shape of free roam, allowing up to four friends to explore dystopian London however they see fit. Dynamic events and specially designed co-op missions have been designed to further diversify the experience.

Competitive players can expect to try their hand at the deathmatch mode, Spider-Bot Arena, which will see four to eight players duke it out with bots. The franchise’s Invasion mode is also set to return; this usually optional mode lets invaders disguise themselves as NPCs and venture into another player’s game to steal data. More details will likely become available in the lead up to Online Mode’s release.

Watch Dogs: Legion is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
