Warrior Nun Season 3 Plans Revealed By Showrunner After Controversial Cancellation

Warrior Nun Season 3 Plans Revealed By Showrunner After Controversial Cancellation

Warrior Nun creator Simon Barry has detailed what would have happened in season 3 of the Netflix series following its controversial cancellation. The fantasy action series was axed by the streaming service in December 2022, leading to a major fan campaign to revive the show. While the franchise will be returning as a trilogy of movies, it’s unclear how much of the original series the new rendition will be featuring.

Speaking with The OCS Newsletter, Barry detailed what would have happened in Warrior Nun season 3 had the show been renewed.

Discussing season 3 at 49:53, the showrunner revealed it would have featured a darker version of Ava working alongside Reya, with Beatrice as the only one who can keep her friend from becoming a villain. Check out what Barry had to say below:

There’s not a lot to talk about other than, you know, what we hoped the bigger story of season 3 would be. And, you know, for me, my intention was, when we were writing season 2 and creating this sacrifice for Ava as a character, was because she really does sort of put herself ahead…. The arc of her character from season 1 to season 2 is really one of self sacrifice…she gives up this fantasy of being reborn and having a life, and decides that it’s better that she sacrifices herself for her friends and the people she cares about. So in season 3, I really wanted to kind of flip the script a little bit and have Ava’s return be…she’s the villain in a way. Not in a deliberate way, but that she comes back changed by Reya. And Reya basically is using her as a weapon to execute a plan, which I don’t have time to get into, on this interview. And the idea being that the OCS has to find Beatrice, who’s gone missing, because only Beatrice can snap Ava out of this place she is…this reverie or this mindset, that she is part of. Beatrice has to save her in kind of in this emotional/psychic/loving way to prevent her from just self-destructing, essentially. But Ava was gonna be the bad guy.

Will The Warrior Nun Movie Trilogy Follow Plans For Season 3?

Warrior Nun Season 3 Plans Revealed By Showrunner After Controversial Cancellation

At the end of Warrior Nun season 2, Ava is heavily injured after defeating Adriel, forcing her to go through the Ark into Reya’s dimension to heal. After losing the woman she loves, Beatrice leaves the OCS, determined to find her own destiny. Barry’s plans for season 3 seem like they would have reunited the pair, saving Ava from becoming a major antagonist and bringing Beatrice back to the OCS.

Given Barry’s openness about his plans for season 3, it appears the upcoming Warrior Nun movie trilogy may not be continuing the show’s story. While the series’ executive producer Dean English will be involved, there has been no confirmation yet that the new movies will continue from where the Netflix show left off. A lack of news about what to expect from the movies means it’s impossible to tell how the trilogy will play out.

However, in this same interview, Barry indicates the movies will be going in a different direction from the show, underscoring why he decided to reveal season 3 details now. If Warrior Nun season 3 had come to fruition, it would have added depth to its core characters by giving them new, unexpected roles in the story. It remains to be seen if the movie trilogy will incorporate some of these ideas into its story, or if some version of the showrunner’s plans will see the light of day in the future.
