Warner Bros. Teasing Movie Announcements In September

Warner Bros. appears to be planning some big movie announcements in September. The studio, one of the biggest currently working in Hollywood today, is home to some of the most beloved franchises to ever cross the big screen. This includes the DCEU and other standalone DC films, the Harry Potter series, and the MonsterVerse, home to movies like Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Most recently, Warner Bros. launched its own streaming service, HBO Max, filled with old classics and new originals.

Like every other major studio, Warner Bros. has been impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. Several productions for their upcoming films are currently delayed, including The Batman and Fantastic Beasts 3. Additionally, just last week, Warner Bros. announced the change of seven different release dates, including those for Tenet, Wonder Woman 1984, and The Matrix 4. For some time, Tenet was expected to finally kick off the summer movie season, but it has since been pushed to the very end of July. Last week’s changes were just the latest the studio was forced to make in response to the pandemic.

Still, Warner Bros. is looking ahead to the future, though exactly why remains unclear. A trio of posts appeared on various Warner Bros. social media pages yesterday, each one hinting that something is coming in September. The first was for The Goonies, the second for Sherlock Holmes, and the third for Beetlejuice. You can see them for yourself in the space below.

These posts don’t offer much of an explanation, and the movies in question certainly seem very random. This begs the question though: What’s coming in September? An easy answer would be these videos are hinting at future HBO Max arrivals, but that doesn’t quite fit. The Goonies was just added this month, and the second Sherlock Holmes film was as well. Also, it wouldn’t really make sense to single out three movies for their future streaming arrivals three months beforehand.

The next possible explanation is some kind of sequels for these movies. On one hand, this doesn’t quite work for Sherlock Holmes because a third film is already scheduled for December 2021. On the other, fans have been curious about a Goonies sequel for years. While some of the original stars have cast doubt on it ever happening, Warner Bros. could finally be planning a sequel, or perhaps even a reboot. As for Beetlejuice, there have been various attempts over the years to make a sequel happen, but the latest update said it had been shelved in 2019. Maybe things have gotten moving again? And, to go back to Sherlock Holmes, Warner Bros. might be planning a major update on the third Robert Downey Jr.-Jude Law film. Something is definitely on the way, but we’ll have to wait until September to truly find out.
