WandaVision Will Reportedly Resume Filming In July

Marvel Studios will reportedly resume production on WandaVision in July. Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is filled with exciting sequels and new potential movie franchises, but it will also be when the MCU moves to the small screen with Disney+. After multiple loosely connected Marvel shows on ABC, Netflix, Hulu, and Freeform, Disney’s streaming service will host a variety of shows that will tie directly into the movies. The Falcon and The Winter Soldier is still scheduled to be the first MCU Disney+ show, but WandaVision is slated to arrive a few months later.

After Disney moved the release of WandaVision up to December 2020, the series hit a snag as the coronavirus shut down Hollywood productions around the world. The work stoppage came as the show, which stars Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany as Scarlet Witch and Vision, was believed to be nearing the end of filming. A wrap party was held in early March, but reports indicate there is still work that needs to be done. After going months without a clear sign of when WandaVision could be completed, we may now know when filming will continue.

It has been revealed that Paul Bettany had to cancel an appearance at Tampa Bay Comic Convention, which is scheduled to run from July 10-12th. In the announcement of the news on TBCC’s Facebook page, the con revealed Bettany’s reps gave them the news because it will conflict with when he has to resume filming WandaVision. This news isn’t confirmed by Marvel, but now it appears WandaVision will be in production during the middle of July.

If WandaVision does restart production in July, it will mark a four-month break for the cast and crew. It is not yet known what impact this will have on the series’ release schedule, as Disney and Marvel already moved it up from the original 2021 release. Depending on how many weeks of filming are left, WandaVision could still potentially be ready to hit Disney+ in December as planned. This would likely require post-production work to have continued virtually during coronavirus, which is not confirmed to have happened. But, there might not be a need to stick to the December 2020 release after Phase 4’s movies were delayed multiple times, including Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (which WandaVision helps set up) being pushed back almost a full year.

Now that Hollywood has begun outlining guidelines for how productions can resume after the coronavirus, WandaVision will likely be one of many shows or movies to return by July. As far as the MCU is concerned, there are no signs of when other paused Phase 4 projects will resume, but WandaVision‘s potential July start at least is a starting point. The Falcon and The Winter Soldier still has weeks of filming to do, making it difficult to imagine the current August release sticking. Meanwhile, Disney+’s Loki show could continue filming this summer as well, while the rest of production on Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and reshoots for Eternals could be scheduled soon. The possibility of WandaVision resuming production in July would indicate that Marvel is starting to solidify their plans, so hopefully more information will be revealed soon.
