WandaVision: 10 Ways The Series Impacts MCU Phase 4

WandaVision: 10 Ways The Series Impacts MCU Phase 4

The central mystery of WandaVision is slowly unfolding in the Disney+ streaming series, but the outcome is likely to have major implications for the greater Marvel Cinematic Universe. Actor Paul Bettany, who plays Vision, has said the ending of the series will ‘reframe the entire MCU.’

The consequences seem to be major, judging from what little is known from upcoming movies and television series in the franchise. It seems that WandaVision will have as big an impact on the entire MCU as the biggest Marvel movies before it.

The Multiverse Of Madness

WandaVision: 10 Ways The Series Impacts MCU Phase 4

The first and most obvious impact the series will have on the MCU will be felt in the upcoming movie Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Elizabeth Olsen, who plays the tremendously powerful Scarlet Witch, will play a key role in the movie. It seems she will also play a role in the introduction of the multiverse to the MCU. Given her reality-altering abilities in the comics and now the MCU, it appears likely that Wanda will be in some way connected, if not responsible, for the multiverse.

Spider-Man 3

Many non-MCU characters from Marvel screen franchises could show up in the next Doctor Strange. Fans already know this is happening in the third MCU Spider-Man movie.

For example, Doctor Octopus from the Sam Raimi Spider-Man 2 will be appearing. Is their introduction a result of Wanda’s actions? Does her manipulating reality in Westview ultimately lead to a breakdown between dimensions, leading to the Spider-Man villains fitting into the MCU?

Squadron Supreme

The show may also be setting up another potential MCU franchise. Some of Wanda and Vision’s neighbors in Westview have interesting histories in the comic books.

Longtime comic readers likely noticed nods to the Squadron Supreme among the many Easter eggs in the first two episodes of WandaVision. Phil Jones is the husband of Arcanna, a powerful witch on the team in the comics, and in the show, he’s married to the mysterious Dottie. Could they be members of the dimension-hopping comic book team?

Mephisto

The show also seems to be teasing another major Marvel character: the devil-like villain Mephisto. One theory has the classic Marvel antagonist being the actual villain behind WandaVision. Several hidden references in the show seem to lead back to the character.

Agnes, Wanda’s neighbor, brings Wanda a bunny for the magic show named Señor Scratchy. This is a play on Mr. Scratch, an alias of the devil. “The devil is in the details,” Dottie says at the pool party. Agnes says that’s not the only place he is. Could the series introduce Mephisto to the MCU?

Jane Foster Thor

The multiverse will play a major role in Phase 4 of the MCU. Will it play a role in Thor: Love And Thunder? It’s not clear yet if the Jane Foster version of Thor that will appear in the movie is the Jane previously established in the MCU, or she is from an alternate reality where she became Thor.

Many of the upcoming Phase 4 villains seem to have been inadvertently created by the heroes of the Marvel Universe. Could the Jane Foster Thor also be a consequence of Wanda’s actions?

Kang The Conqueror

One of those villains in Phase 4 is Kang The Conqueror. This classic Avengers villain from the far-future will make his long-awaited MCU debut in Ant-Man And The Wasp: Qunatummania.

While it’s very possible that he emerges from the fallout of the time travel efforts of the Avengers in Avengers: Endgame, it’s also possible that he is a result of Wanda Maximoff. If Wanda in some way breaks down reality, that could lead to problems with the Quantum Realm, the means by which Kang is likely to maneuver within the MCU.

Young Avengers

A young version of Kang was a member of the Young Avengers, a team in the comics that included Thomas and William, the children of Wanda and the Vision. The MCU seems to be building toward the Young Avengers with the addition of the Kate Bishop Hawkeye, a grown-up Cassie Lang, among others.

The history of Thomas and William is very complicated, with their conception involving fragments of the soul of Mephisto. Wanda didn’t know this when she created them, and this fact led to a breakdown with severe consequences for the entire Marvel universe.

Spectrum

Monica Rambeau touches the hex in WandaVision

One of the biggest consequences of WandaVision is likely to involve Monica Rambeau. The grown-up daughter of Maria Rambeau from the 2019 Captain Marvel movie is a major player in the new series and a member of SWORD, the organization her mother helped to create.

In the comic books, Monica was once Captain Marvel and later Spectrum. She has enormous powers over the electromagnetic spectrum, including becoming and manipulating X-rays, radio waves, and television waves, which of course play a major role in the series.

Hawkeye

Hawkeye Scarlet Avengers age of ultron

Wanda could play a role in the creation of the Young Avengers from the comics. One of them, Kate Bishop, is set to appear in the upcoming Hawkeye Disney+ series.

Hawkeye has changed a lot since Phase 1, and he could continue to grow thanks to his connection to Wanda. The two share a bond going back to her introduction in Age Of Ultron, and it’s very possible that Clint Barton will play some kind of role in the final outcome of WandaVision. Could he be the one to bring her back around, and will there be consequences?

The X-Men

X-Men Evan Peters Quicksilver MCU Scarlet Witch Elizabeth Olsen

The Scarlet Witch has been connected to the X-Men in the comic books since the very beginning, first as a villain with the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. She is also responsible for one of the most horrific acts of violence against them. In utter despair over the realization that her children weren’t real, Wanda spiraled into grief that ultimately led to the House of M.

In this comic, Wanda erased all but a few hundred mutants from existence with a simple phrase: ‘No more mutants.’ Mutants don’t exist in the MCU, yet. Could she be responsible for them? Could her actions lead not just characters from past Spider-Man movies appearing in the MCU, but the X-Men movies as well?
