Maggie and Negan are on a desperate mission to save Hershel in the new trailer for The Walking Dead: Dead City. The Walking Dead may be over, but the universe will live on in spinoff form, as three new TWD shows are set to join Fear the Walking Dead on AMC in the coming months. First up, the unlikely duo of Maggie and Negan team up for a mission to a zombie-infested New York in The Walking Dead: Dead City.The Walking Dead fans wondering why Maggie would ever dream of teaming up with Negan again may receive their answer from the newest Dead City teaser trailer, which sees Maggie recruiting Negan to help her find her kidnapped son Hershel (via The Walking Dead/Twitter).
In the clip, Maggie tells Negan he’s “the key” to getting Hershel back – a cryptic line to be sure, but one that seems to indicate Maggie badly needs Negan. And since Maggie would do anything to save her son, it makes sense that she’d even team up with Negan to make that happen.
Why Would Negan Be Key To Getting Hershel Back
Exactly why Maggie needs Negan’s help so badly is something that will presumably be explained when The Walking Dead: Dead City premieres on AMC. Perhaps it’s just a matter of Negan possessing a particular set of skills that Maggie knows she can use to help her defeat whatever enemies she encounters during the course of her rescue mission. Or perhaps there’s something in particular Negan knows about the group that has taken Hershel, that can help Maggie get her son back.
Negan of course would seem to be redeemed since his days as the leader of the Saviors, when he infamously murdered Maggie’s husband Glenn in brutal fashion. And obviously, Negan himself became a father during the final Walking Dead season, so he clearly understands what Maggie is going through as she suffers the horror of having her son snatched away from her.
But it’s indeed already been teased that Maggie perhaps should not fully trust Negan, as Jeffrey Dean Morgan himself has talked about the “old” Negan making a return appearance on the new show. Could it be that teaming up with her enemy will come back to bite Maggie? Or will Negan prove to be a truly worthy ally, who channels his “old Negan” energy in ways that help bring Hershel home? Fans will find out when The Walking Dead: Dead City hits AMC in June 2023.
