Villeneuve’s Dune Climbs Into Netflix’s Global Chart As Part 2 Dominates 2024 Box Office

Denis Villeneuve’s 2021 film Dune makes its way onto the Netflix global top 10. Dune began the story of Paul Atreides and his premonition-like dreams, which is continued in this year’s Dune: Part Two. Dune: Part Two features a star-studded cast including Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Dave Bautista, Christopher Walken, Anya Taylor-Joy, Josh Brolin, Florence Pugh, and Javier Bardem.

Now, the first Dune has made the Netflix Global Top 10. Dune came in no. 8 for the week of February 26–March 3, garnering 3.6 million views. Topping the list this week were Code 8 Part II at no. 1 (20 million views), and Mea Culpa at no. 2 (18.5 million views).

Dune: Part Two’s Massive Box Office Success Explained

The success of Dune on the Netflix charts is undoubtedly linked to increased interest in the franchise spurred by Dune: Part Two. So far, Dune: Part Two has been a success in all senses of the word. The sequel is critically acclaimed, holding a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 95% approval rating among fans. Dune: Part Two opened to an impressive $82.5 million worldwide, nearly touching the totals of last year’s Oppenheimer.

Furthermore, Dune: Part Two has already reached two major box office milestones before even completing its second weekend in theaters. Those two milestones were crossing $100 million domestically and crossing $200 million worldwide. The first Villeneuve-helmed Dune only made $108.8 million domestically during its entire run, so for the sequel to nearly match that before its second weekend is astounding.
