Veronica Mars Revival Casts Battlestar Galactica’s Mary McDonnell

The Veronica Mars revival has added Battlestar Galactica vet Mary McDonnell to the cast. The detective series starring Kristen Bell was canceled after three seasons, to the dismay of fans. After the successful premiere of the Veronica Mars film in 2014, the show is being resurrected with Hulu picking up the series revival. Members of the original cast are slated to return, with the addition of new faces such as McDonnell.

Originally airing on the CW, Veronica Mars follows a teen (played by Bell) who believes her worse plight in life is getting dumped by her boyfriend until the tragic death of her best friend Lilly Kane (Amanda Seyfried). As Veronica’s life unravels, she follows in her father’s sheriff footsteps, and into the life of mystery and crime solving. Created by Rob Thomas, the series ended on a cliffhanger in 2007. In 2013, Thomas and Bell joined forces to start a Kickstarter campaign to produce a Veronica Mars feature film. Fans eagerly flocked to the Kickstarter page with their open wallets, and the project broke records, earning $2 million in eleven hours. After the success of the film, it didn’t take long for Warner Bros. and Hulu to show interest in reviving the show for an eight-episode run. The slated cast list has familiar and fresh faces ready to dive into the new series.

According to TV Line, McDonnell will play a caring and good-natured therapist. The plot of the revival will find Mars hired to solve the murder of spring breakers in Neptune, which unravels one epic mystery. However, at this time, is unclear how many episodes McDonnell will appear in – and who the character is that will be pouring out their heart in her therapist’s office. McDonnell is a two-time Oscar-nominated actress with an impressive list of credits to her name, including Donnie Darko, Grey’s Anatomy, Fargo and Battlestar Galactica – in which she played President Laura Roslin. Given McDonnell’s vast range of talent, there’s no doubt her character will entail more than just therapy work.

Fans of the original series have responded positively with the announcements of series alumni returning. Familiar faces will include, Rose (Max), Daggs III (Wallace), Capra (Weevil), Jason Dohring (Logan) and Ryan Hanson (Dick). Veronica Mars has added further intrigue with its slew of new faces, such as Patton Oswalt, Clifton Collins Jr., Tyler Alvarez, J.K. Simmons, and Kirby Howell-Baptiste – who worked with Bell on The Good Place.

Each new cast member brings a new component to the neo-noir mystery series. Therapists – onscreen and offscreen – can be part of some of the most altering, revealing and edgy relationships one has. Hollywood has explored this bond in numerous works such as How to Get Away with Murder, You and The Sopranos. Given McDonnell’s natural charm, depth, and aptitude in her work, she’ll no doubt contribute to the mystery, and perhaps mystery-solving, of Veronica Mars. While there’s been a lapse in time between the feature and the revival, there hasn’t been a lapse in the fan base. Each detail revealed about the project only furthers the anticipation for Hulu’s Veronica Mars.
