Velma Scooby-Doo Spinoff First Image Reveals Gory, Very Adult Cartoon

The first official image from Scooby-Doo’s Velma spin-off reveals how adult and gory the animated series will be. Velma Dinkley is one of the members of the iconic fivesome from the Scooby-Doo franchise, which began with the 1969 Hanna-Barbera cartoon series Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!. She is typically depicted wearing an orange turtleneck sweater over a pleated red skirt. While she is the most intelligent member of the Scooby Gang and is frequently instrumental in solving mysteries, she has a habit of losing her glasses, rendering her temporarily unable to see.

In February 2021, Warner Bros announced that the character would be getting an animated spin-off titled Velma on HBO Max. The series will follow the character’s origin story before she ever encountered Scooby-Doo or the Mystery Machine, with The Office writer and star Mindy Kaling voicing the character, who is now of South Asian descent. She is also executive producing with Charlie Grandy, Howard Klein, and Sam Register.

Today, Kaling spoke at a presentation about Velma at the Warner Bros Discovery Upfront event. She also shared a first-look image from the series captured by Variety. The photo shows Velma in a locker room, discovering a grisly murder scene, complete with a body with the top of its skull cut off and its brain removed. It’s a shocking sight for any fan familiar with the typical content of a Scooby-Doo episode. Check out a photograph of the Velma still, taken at the presentation, below:

This picture is incontrovertible proof that Velma will be a more adult-oriented series despite being a cartoon. The gore is a far cry from the more family-oriented monsters and classic frights of the original series. However, the image also includes much more nudity than the Scooby-Doo cartoons, though the characters’ bodies are strategically covered in suds.

Not much has been revealed about Velma so far, including plot details and the names of the show’s other cast members. However, viewers can extrapolate a lot of information from this image, including that Velma is probably attending college throughout the series. While the mysteries that she solves may not all be murders, they will certainly involve much more mature themes than the typical Scooby-Doo animated fare.
