USA’s The Sinner Renewed for Season 3, Matt Bomer Will Play Lead

USA’s The Sinner has officially been renewed for season 3, and Matt Bomer will join the cast as a primary series lead. From 2009 to 2014, Bomer starred as criminal consultant Neal Caffrey in the USA drama White Collar. In the animated realm, he voiced Superman aka Clark Kent in the 2013 film Superman: Unbound.

Based on a 2007 novel by German writer Petra Hammesfahr, The Sinner was originally ordered as an eight-episode, “close-ended” series. In season 1, Jessica Biel stars as Cora Tannetti, a woman who murders a man on a beach but doesn’t recollect the crime. She’s investigated by Detective Harry Ambrose, portrayed by veteran character actor Bill Pullman. For her season 1 performance, Biel received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress – Miniseries or Television Film, along with a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie. Meanwhile, Pullman reprised his role in season 2, starring opposite Carrie Coon. In the 2018 film Avengers: Infinity War, Coon portrayed the cosmic supervillain Proxima Midnight. On television, she previously starred in both HBO’s The Leftovers and FX’s Fargo.

Per Deadline, Bomer will join The Sinner for season 3. He’ll portray a character named Jamie, an expectant father who looks to Pullman’s Ambrose for support in the wake of a tragic car accident on the outskirts of Dorchester, New York. In 2000, Bomer began his on-screen career in the ABC soap opera All My Children. He later appeared in CBS’ Guiding Light and FOX’s Tru Calling before landing a lead role in the short-lived 2007 ABC series Traveler. That same year, Bomer also portrayed Byrce Larkin on NBC’s spy drama Chuck, of which preceded the Missouri native’s breakout role on USA’s White Collar. He’s also appeared in Magic Mike, Magic Mike XXL, and the Amazon series The Last Tycoon.

The Sinner was developed Derek Simmonds, and the aforementioned Biel serves a co-executive producer, along with noted indie filmmaker Antonio Campos. In the past, Campos has directed the features Afterschool, Simon Killer, and Christine. He also directed the first three episodes of The Sinner season 1, along with the first two episodes in season 2. As for Bomer, he most recently appeared in the 2018 films Jonathan, Papi Chulo, and Viper Club.

While The Sinner’s second season didn’t match the overall critical acclaim of season 1, Pullman delivered a standout performance in a reprisal role. Now that Bomer has returned to USA, fans can expect the anthology crime drama to create more awards season buzz for the network.
