Updated: Special Effects Master Stan Winston Has Died

Man, it’s been a rough couple of months for well-known people passing away in the Hollywood industry. I’ve just learned that the well-loved and amazingly talented visual effects master Stan Winston has died. He was only 62 years old.

His last completed work was the creation of the armors in the recent hit Iron Man – he was scheduled to do special effects work on Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins.

Winston died at home Sunday evening after a seven-year struggle with multiple myeloma (a cancer of the plasma cell that is treatable but incurable), according to a rep from Stan Winston Studio.

“Stan died peacefully at home surrounded by family,” a spokeswoman said.

Stan leaves a heck of a legacy behind him and is the man behind the visual and make-up effects of many of movies that have left a big impression on me including Aliens, Predator, The Thing, and Terminator I & II. He also shared an Oscar for VFX work with Phil Tippet for the film Jurassic Park.

My condolences go out to his family. He will definitely be missed in Hollywood…
