Upcoming TV Show Is The Perfect Peaky Blinders Replacement 2 Years After Cillian Murphy’s Show Ended

Fans of Peaky Blinders, the Cillian Murphy-starred historical drama, will finally have a replacement after two years of waiting in the upcoming BBC One series This Town. Peaky Blinders chronicles the rise of the Shelby family in 1900s England, a notorious gang that earned the name Peaky Blinders by sewing razor blades into the peaks of their caps. Led by Murphy’s character Tommy Shelby, the gang quickly take over the city of Birmingham and dispatch anyone who gets in the way of their growing empire.

Peaky Blinders was created and written by Steven Knight, with Murphy starring alongside other larger names such as Sam Neill and Helen McCroy. The show ran for six seasons from 2013 to 2022, with Knight afterward going on to write several miniseries, including All The Light We Cannot See and the 2023 adaptation of Charles Dickens’s novel Great Expectations. Murphy has, since then, starred in several films, including the award-winning historical drama Oppenheimer.

This series is great for audiences who miss the complex world of Peaky Blinders. Also created by Steven Knight, This Town follows a Birmingham-based family, though it is set in the 1980s and focuses on the working class. Much like Peaky Blinders’ characters, this new family must unite as they navigate the music scene of the time, with violence erupting and loyalties being tested. Though this series is about the formation of a band and their creative journey, fans of Peaky Blinders can enjoy similar character dynamics and moments of gang politics, though this series will not emphasize organized crime.

What Other Peaky Blinders Projects Are Confirmed For The FutureThe Peaky Blinders walking together down the street

Alongside watching This Town, fans of the show could potentially revisit the Shelby family in one of the many Peaky Blinders spinoffs, giving both shows more attention and historical context. A movie adaptation was confirmed by Knight, according to USA Today, with Murphy returning as Tommy Shelby. With that adaptation, fans can not only witness the end of Tommy Shelby’s story but also witness the history that may inform some of the events of This Town, as they take place in the same city whose history was marked by the gangs the Shelbys were based on.

The movie was not the only confirmed spinoff that would also be a perfect companion for each series. A Peaky Blinders show set in Boston has been confirmed and, as it will be set several decades after the original series, could grant further historical context and nuance to This Town. With a focus on an international market like music, audiences can see how the actions of these gangs could have influenced the music the family creates as well as how far those power structures in Birmingham have spread in the intervening decades, creating a gripping timeline for fans to witness.
