Uncle Scrooge Opens the Disney Multiverse

Marvel’s upcoming over-sized Disney special will feature Scrooge McDuck in a cosmic adventure unlike any he has ever had before. Like his Disney Afternoon counterpart, Darkwing Duck, Scrooge will have his own evil alter to thwart. This evil variant will likely highlight the worst of the hero’s greedy side, rivaling his Ebenezer Scrooge Disney persona from Mickey’s Christmas Carol (1983) if he never had a change of heart. While he is already very rich, being the richest and most powerful of all was previously a rivalry saved for Flintheart Glomgold and Magica de Spell. The synopsis for the series is as follows:

UNCLE SCROOGE AND THE INFINITY DIME #1 will see Scrooge embark on a time-honored Marvel adventure as he explores the Multiverse to stop a twisted alternate Scrooge from becoming the all-powerful and incomprehensibly rich Scrooge-Above-All! Along the way, the story will introduce exciting new takes on the iconic tycoon with a heart of gold and feature appearances by Scrooge’s nephew, Donald Duck; grandnephews, Huey, Dewey, and Louie; and his supporting cast of characters, including Gyro Gearloose!

Multiverse adventures have been a big trend in comics and film as of late, with Marvel diving into it cinematically in Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness (2022). The comic publisher has been no stranger to multiverse storytelling, introducing alternate variants of many of its most iconic characters, particularly in the case of Spider-Man with the ever-expanding Spider-Verse. Contrarily, Disney hasn’t delved into very much multiversal exploration outside of Ralph Breaks the Internet (2018), which saw the Disney Princesses interacting in a virtual world with the hero of the movie. Now, Disney’s richest resident of Duckburg could pave the way for a broader multiverse for the company’s properties, particularly in comics.

Disney’s Comic Icon is Perfect for Marvel’s Newest Venture

Regarding this new Uncle Scrooge adventure, Jason Aaron says, “It’s one of the most mind-staggering thrills of my career to get to craft this epic cosmic adventure for the World’s Richest Duck, one that looks to honor the character’s legendary history while taking him to some wild, new, unexplored places in the way that only Marvel can deliver.

Considering Scrooge’s journey from comic book hero to iconic cartoon character and star of two DuckTales animated series, he’s the perfect candidate for Disney’s next big comic adventure. With the ability to travel the Multiverse and a Disney Multiverse coming into existence, there’s the potential for even more characters to feature in crossover stories or meet their own variants. The richest duck is known for his adventurous spirit and for being an accomplished explorer. As a comic icon in his own right, it only makes sense for Scrooge McDuck to open the next biggest venue for Disney in the realm of comics.

Scrooge McDuck and the Infinity Dime #1 will be available June 19 from Marvel Comics.
